basically, i am looking to make calls from my mbp to europe for free

No idea of any Mac versions, but if you run Windows on your Mac you should be able to run this app.

looks like i may have to do just that..
this is actually for my mom, and she is using her first computer ever so i figured os x would be the best since it's so simple. looks like i will have to introduce her to windows now

There are plenty for the Mac. No need to run Windows for just that. Look at VersionTracker/MacUpdate or Google it.

Isn't Skype free if it is to another Skype client? (I haven't looked at it in a long time, so it could have changed since I last did).

Yes it is, but it doesn't offer free calls to land lines across countries. Having a quick look on justvoip site it looks likes they offer 120 days worth of free calls once you've bought credit. Free Calls | JustVoip
Personally I would go the Skype route and now you can get Skype connected phones that don't need a computer it's a lot easier to use for none technical people.
