I remember the days of yahoo chat. in 1997 it was the place to be. they had a very hopping mac lounge and the windows lounge and the mac lounge were in tight rivalry always starting fight with each other.

anyway I just was thinking back to the old days and went to find the chat rooms at yahoo and couldn't. ..and was wondering if chat no longer exists; cuz it 's no longer in?

I dunno, I never participated in that.

Obviously, the Lounge is today's chat room.

I never have been in a chat room but they seem to catch pedos on NBC all the time who meet young stuff in chat rooms.

They've got back to being called "IRC channels," I think.

Why chat when you can blog? I mean, chatting involves having to actually read what other folks are saying and that kind of thing might get in the way of telling everyone else how many times you've been to the head that day.

What is 'the head' in this context?

Lotsa of memories from the AOL days. Hours chatting at hourly rates... good times.

Yahoo was easier, but wore thin after a while.

OMG it was terrible.

The New Jersey channel(s) were SO much fun. Then all of a sudden you'd get these bots with female names say:

"but I'm lonely so if you come chat with me I'll be happy"

Clever. It made the bot sound legit. However, the plan backfired after the bot started rotating its messages.

Then came the spam....

"Pretty little thing. I'll do anything..."
"I'm lonely and on my cam"

And on and on and it was SO obvious. It made chatting annoying.

The straw that broke Yahoo's back was the IM spam. Over and over. Like 20 an hour. And you'd block/ban them and they still came. It made the place a joke.

The only thing about your blog which didn't bore me senseless was the pic of your sister.
It's much better having you here, where we can use two-way communication to compare notes about libs being idiots.

I don't use google talk at all. But I use MSN and AIM, so I am still using the devil.
I've used chat rooms recently when I tried to find out whether I would like to use Linux. I was able to receive support with my problems in various IRC channels. IRC channels are also the place where the programmers of most open source applications reside. I once was able to receive help with a problem that I had in Transmission (The Bittorrent client).
I must admit that I much rather spend/waste my time on message boards. Message boards are more organized and the archived threads are usually more interesting, or at least at times than the present discussion. In IRC you only have access to the live discussions, and naturally they can be boring at times. On message boards you have all the information right in front of you. So if you find it boring you can just surf away. In IRC/chat is more of a wait and see.
The only reason I use chat (MSN/AIM) is because that is what most of my friends use. I would much rather delegate the discussions to a message board. That might be the reason why I like Facebook.

I did my online chatting in the 80s. When the internet came around, it was old hat to me.

But then they'll just refer to it as IRCCC chat channel.
