Just take the iPhone: not only did Apple take over the "genre" but they defined the direction of future improvements.
Can anyone remember the pitiful implementations of so-called "dinosaur-era-smartphones" before Apple redefined the whole smartphone category? It's hard to even think of those measly early efforts as even being smartphones!
It's like jumping from the dark ages to "Beam me up, Scotty!"
Every single smartphone today is defined and marketed only in comparison to the iPhone.
