Thanks Mattyb!

When I first heard about the Raspberry Pi I thought of it mostly as a geek project just done for the sake of geekery, but the potential here for robotics and useful applications is very cool! Maybe these sorts of devices will find their way into autonomous vehicles?

The potential applications are endless : old people, dangerous environments (nuclear, mining, underwater, etc), waste disposal...

And of course the most important :

SEX TOYS !!!!

XBMC works fine on it.

Fine is the key word. But it will get better. As a whole the project seems to be focusing on low end hardware more and more.

Check out RaspBMC - it's a custom build of Debian with XBMC preinstalled. It's not as slick as Plex, but it works perfectly fine for what amounts to a $35 HTPC.

Also: look on eBay for enclosure options. I found a plastic one from a UK seller for like $8 shipped that worked out great.

Also also: the built-in NIC is terrible. It runs on the device's USB bus, and the chipset they went with just performs terribly. If you need lots of high bandwidth capability, I'd recommend getting a better USB wired or wifi adapter.

I should've mentioned that cuz that was what I was referring to. Fantastic program.

Finally fired mine up. What an awesome little computer.

I sometimes need to play a video loop "in the field" on whatever monitor or TV happens to be available. This is perfect. Strap a battery pack to it and zip tie the whole block to the back of the TV.

The Raspberry Pi is quickly becoming the device of choice for the home theater within my group. It can't stream HD Netflix or Hulu yet, but once it can there won't be much reason to get anything else.

I'm trying to find it, but there's a somewhat recent (and cheap) LG BD player that can be hacked and turned into a universal streamer running linux (via its SD card slot), and still keep its disc player functionality. I saw rumblings about it ~6mo ago and was going to grab one just as a cool project to play with, but it slipped my mind. You can do the same with the Oppo players, even buy them pre-worked, but they're more pricey.

I am more than a little excited about this project and will definitely be testing it:

Basically turns your RP into a ChromeCast.
