All was well a few weeks ago, but now using either my generic mac buds or any other headset I have to fiddle with the plug to get any sound at all - usually pulling out just a bit, and then I can usually only get sound from one speaker. Is this a hardware issue?

Thanks

Yes.

Blow into the jack or pry around with a toothpick - there's probably some dirt lodged in there.

Spheric's tip also works for 30-pin and Lightning connectors. iPhones pick up all manners of pocket crud.
