Real weird problem: The File menu in Word 2004 has disappeared on my daughter's PB. Everything's fine in a second admin user account, so I talked her thru deleting the Word prefs in the original user, but none of that worked.
Any suggestions short of reinstalling?

Ah, yes I can see how you can customize what appears in the various menus, and I can see how you can actually drag "File" off the toolbar and make it disappear. And I can see that you can highlight the Menu Toolbar and click the Reset button to make it reappear.
Thanks a bunch, I'll call her again tomorrow and see if this works!!

I think your strategy of removing the Word prefs is the correct approach. I assume that you know that there is a Microsoft folder in ~/Library/Preferences as well as the com.microsoft.xxx preference files. I think that's where this setting would be.

thanks, philm, tried removing both the individual files within the MS prefs folder as well as replacing the entire folder with the one from the user that worked. Also deleted the com.ms.word.plist in the main prefs folder. Nothing worked.
I'll know more by tomorrow whether the above tools solution works. more skype to Sweden...

I bet it works. I don't know how it happens, but a surprising number of people either make their File menu or their New Document command disappear. Customize always brings it back.
