Well, at least I think it's a kernel panic. It's been happening about every 2 or 3 days lately. Not really at convenient times either. How can I fix this? thanks

Maybe your graphics card is defective or overheating. Is the card's fan turning for example?

A fan is spinning inside, but i can't be sure that its the video card fan. i didn't know there was more than one.

Also, after installing the latest security patch this morning, the machine hangs during the bootup and says it needs to be restarted. So I restart it, and the same message comes back. Solution: Boot from DVD, archive and reinstall?

thanks again

Boot from DVD, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select the boot volume and click the "Repair disk" button until it says "the volume appears to be OK". Then do an Archive & Install of the operating system.

That might fix it, but if the problem is a hardware defect (and it looks like it to me), then that won't help. If it doesn't, you need to bring your Mac to repair.

Yeah, it's worth trying other avenues first, but it sounds like a hardware problem.

Also wouldn't hurt to make sure your video card has the latest firmware and you're using the latest drivers. Silly to mention it, but I thought I'd throw it in just for thoroughness.

THanks for the advice guys. I have had this powerbook repaired twice already (replaced the mother board twice). I'm not in the mood to have it fixed again, especially since they won't fix it without the original HDD in it. Let's hope the other ideas work!

After a archive and reinstall, the computer still won't boot from the hdd. i believe the actual install didn't complete all the way (got stuck on a blue screen after the reboot.) I can still boot from DVD with no problems and run all utilities. But, booting from hdd, the powerbook gets stuck after the apple splash page.

Any other ideas?

You definitely have a hardware problem and having one in a PBG4 makes it trickier. The most likely candidates are typically RAM and HD freakouts, but yours could well be faulty GPU RAM. You might try an external firewire HD to see if it'll boot off that.

It wouldn't boot off an external fw hdd. What I just tried is booting in single user mode (hold shift), and it booted right up. Then did software update, restart, one kernel panic again, reboot, and bammo.... it works again-problem solved.

Still not 100% what was causing this, but lets hope it stays away.

thanks again for all the input

The problem has returned... I can only boot up in safe mode, either from firewire or internal. I just learned about the Apple Hardware Test (comes on the original install DVD for those that don't know) and ran it.

Error Code 2NVD/1/4: 2122 = Video Ram error. Is this something that I can fix on my own? I am comfortable opening it up (have done so when switching out drives etc).

What confuses me is that safe mode lets me boot up fine. Does safe mode bypass the video ram and use system ram for video or something?

If I read that code correctly, you have a 1.5GHz 12" Powerbook.

The graphics card is part of the main logic board in that one, so if the VRAM is defective, you'd need a new mlb.

Have you run the extended test from the Apple Hardware Test DVD (it's part of the Powerbook Install DVD 1 that came with your machine - reboot holding down the Alt key to start from the AHT)?

See what that comes up with.
