I have never heard of Patrior nor does it have the reputation of Crucial. I'd prefer to go with the industry leader.

I may reconsider this purchase, but I might be outside of the US for a few years and REALLY want to make sure I have no problems. Last thing I want is a deam chip and no way to swap it without paying crazy custom fees.

That's exactly right. Crucial RAM has no special "international travel" mode. They'll all work across borders equally well.

I wish I could confirm this. My 512 MB Ram Stick started screwing things up for me after a year or 18 months.

Crucial RAM is among the most expensive. bstone, there are hundreds, maybe thousands of people who max out their ram on their MacBook, could you imagine what would happen if everybody made a post about it?

Yep, $159.99 plus tax for 2 Gigs of Patriot RAM. Took quite a bit of effort to get one of the sticks in, but it's fine now. I've used Patriot before and, while they aren't a very well-known brand, their memory is very decent for its price. I wouldn't try overclocking on it, but then again I would never overclock my MB in the first place (the thing is warm enough as it is!).

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

Yeah, it would be totally crazy! I am glad I am one of the few. But I think my OP is leading to a good discussion.

Enjoy the ram bstone. Who cares how much it costs when it's someone else's ram? I will be buying my 2gb kit from newegg like the rest of you, but it would be nice to slap a made in the usa sticker on something connected to the macbook.

Cruicial is great but I generally go for Ram Jet but, Hello?? You just contradicted yourself. You say you never heard of Patriot ram but you know that it doesn't have the reputation of Cruicial? If you have never heard of it then you can't possibly know it's reputation. Just giving you a hard time but make sure you read what you write. :-)

Gee I wondered why crucial memory was so high... (ok all memory)
July 15, 2006. - Seven of the world's biggest RAM memory manufacturers are facing an antitrust lawsuit from thirty four US Attorney Generals, who are claiming that the companies conspired "to fix DRAM chip prices, artificially restrain supply, allocate among themselves the production of DRAM chips and markets for the chips, and rig bids for DRAM chip contracts" between January 1998 and June 2002.

The lawsuit will be filed in the US District Court for Northern California by the state's Attorney General, Bill Lockyer. The defendants include Hynix, Infineon, Micron, the manufacturers of Crucial memory, Nanya, Elpida, NEC, and Mosel Vitelic. The world's biggest memory maker, Samsung, is not on the list. However, Samsung was involved in the US Department of Justice's investigation into DRAM price-fixing allegations in 2002 and 2003.

In September 2004, Infineon pleaded guilty to Department of Justice charges that it conspired to set memory prices, and since then, Elpida, Hynix and Samsung have also pleaded guilty and paid punitive fines. Micron admitted that a number of its executives had been involved, but denied the company itself was to blame. The company traded co-operation with the Department of Justice for freedom from criminal sanctions and fines.

In May this year, Samsung, Hynix and Infineon agreed to pay $160m to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by individuals who claimed that they were damaged financially by the alleged conspiracy. In that civil suit, the three firms made no admissions of guilt. The Department of Justice's charges centred on the period April 1999 to June 2002, whereas the action being brought by the Attorney Generals in thirty four states extends back to early 1998.

Judging by all of the recent legal actions being brought against the major companies in the IT industry, much of it, including Microsoft, seems intent on illegally depriving the consumer of as much cash as possible.
