My respect for Christian Bale just increased twofold.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Yeah, one of my fave parts. Compared to his character in TDK, the dude is 10x cooler IRL.

Um, I've yelled at people who were about to ruin hours' worth of work before. It worked just fine to emphasize the "DO NOT DO THAT"-ness of the situation.

It sounds like this was a hard scene Bale was doing and that same guy had messed it up once before and been told off already, so Bale wanted to really hammer the point in.

Maybe, but my point is that as long as you have to work closely with people, they don't perform at their best in intense fear of mistakes.

Perhaps, but it seems this is not necessarily an isolated incident with just co-workers.

His on-set outburst occurred days before he was arrested in London for an alleged assault on his mother and sister in a London hotel room on the eve of The Dark Knight premiere. He did not face charges after the Crown Prosecution Service advised that no further action should be taken.

Batman arrested over 'attack on his mother'

His mother and one of his three sisters claimed that he attacked them in his suite in the Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, on Sunday.

They made their complaint the following day, but police reportedly refrained from approaching Bale immediately to allow him to attend the premiere of The Dark Knight.

This is too easy.
Earlier, one of the PAs had warned the DoP that Bale "can't be bargained with, can't be reasoned with. He doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead."

verbal assault you drama queen

I don't see the big deal at yelling at a subordinate who messed up your work because of their incompetence. A director of photography sounds a couple rungs below the importance of the lead actor in a film. He was within his right to curse the guy out.

I suppose it all depends on the audience. I have zero respect for people that lose control. Regardless of who they are. To me it's a sign of weakness. But for others it may prove useful.

I completely agree.

This is a massive ego, completely out of control. The guy might have actually done something wrong, but Bale should've said something like, "Okay, stop...why are you walking around during the middle of a scene? Could you please not do that? It's very distracting."

Instead, Bale went berserk, freaking out, swearing, apparently threatening with violence, and acting like an 8-year-old throwing a tantrum. If I was a director, I would think twice about hiring someone who could put the entire crew on edge every second of the day.

I love Bale's movies; he's one of my favorite actors, but this was ridiculous.

People who don't understand that working WITH somebody is not the same thing as working FOR somebody probably shouldn't be working freelance.

Everybody will drop an asshole the very first chance they get.

I know that if I were the production manager or the production company (probably the people the DoP actually IS working for - unless this Bale guy owns the production company), I'd think good and hard about ever wanting to subject my people to that kind of treatment again.

Obviously, the star rakes in the dollars, but since this stuff gets around...if he *had* bailed, even Christian Bale wouldn't work again for a *long* time - the production company made sure of that with this recording.

Got to remember that this guy will have spent most of the day in "kill kill kill" mode... What with all the terminators and everything. Some actors find it difficult to completely break character when an upset happens.

More details:

Bob Thompson: Christian Bale's family feud might've incited Terminator: Salvation rage

As it stands, the fall out is all on Bale, who may have been breaking down. Two things to consider on that front: Bale's outburst during filming last summer in New Mexico occurred days after the media frenzy over his shouting encounter with his mother at London's Dorchester Hotel. That incident that led to charges (subsequently dropped). It doesn't take a therapist to figure out the connection between the two.

But that doesn't matter to the folks who make movies. It's the façade that counts and Bale is entering Russell Crowe country, which is not a good place to be. Since Crowe's phone-throwing incident, his career slump is well known in Tinseltown.

Is Bale next to suffer from his own personality excesses? We shall see. But there are forces out there that wanted film fans to know more than the gossipy rumours that surfaced last summer about his anger breakdown directed at a Terminator: Salvation's director of photography. Instead of rumours there is sound. Somebody let this happen.

Without knowing the full back story, it is hard to say if Bale was out of line. For all we know, it could have been the fifth time the guy had interrupted a scene that day.

You don't see a difference between cursing someone out and clocking them in the face with a solid object? Plus one guy actually did something to incite the incident while the other was just present at a situation where only the phone company had fault.

Also the only movies Crowe made this entire decade that are worth watching were Gladiator and 3:10 to Yuma. And in the decade previous there was only one, LA Confidential. There was a whole 4 years before the phone incident where any movie he was in just sucked because he can't act. I am sure that didn't help his career either.

Actually, didn't he say in the audio clip that it was the second time?

Still...wouldn't that be the director's job anyways?

Listen again. Bale was going after the guy, and people sounded like they were restraining him.
