I posted here on how encrypt my travel hardrives. The answer was no nice, right click encrypt.

So I partitioned the drives for the OS and Data.

I right click and a message comes up saying I need a GUID partition to encrypt.
(whatever that means)

Boy you think you are done, but you are not done!

Use Disk Utility to format, click Options, then GUID.

What exactly did you right-click, and where?

I'm fairly sure I encrypted a master boot record exfat drive today. After setting it up in Disk Utility, I right clicked the drive on the desktop and chose to encrypt it.

Changing the partition scheme to GUID is a good idea anyway, in case you ever decide to install a bootable system.

Using Disk Utility?

And you tried to encrypt by right-clicking a partition in the Finder?

Yes, I looked everywhere and could not find option Guid.
But I did see/ FIND erase and format, extended jouraned encrypted, so I did that.

But now it erased both my partitions, and DU now is not offering the ability to make multiple partitions anymore, only 2 partitions equally cut in 2.

I'M TOTALLY BAFFLED LOST NOW.

Apparently, the drive is now ruined, and it does not even ask for a password now.

I had two perfectly made partitions, one bootable, and now it's wont make two partitions anymore

Unmounted, mounted yes now it ask for password! great.
But the drive now have the + method of partitioning, only two is available. 250 gigs each.

Before, at the beginning of all this, I was able to do a partition of 75GB and 433 GB and the 75 was bootable.

Still can't find Guid, real nightmare..

Disk Utility -> Select drive in left column. Not one of the two volume icons within it, but the bare HD icon above the two empty volumes.

Now choose the Partition tab. Above the drive map, click the "Volume Scheme:" popup, choose 2 partitions (or 3, as you wish).

Next, below the volume map. Click the (Options...) button. You'll get options to choose GUID Partition Table, Apple Partition Map, or Master Boot Record. Choose GUID, click OK. The Options menu will close.

You can still adjust the partition sizes. Click the (Apply) button when you want to write the changes to disk.

Partitioning is done. Name your new volumes if you haven't already, install OS as desired, copy files across, install hidden pr0n folder, whatever you wish.

Reader ok got it!
I fixed one of the two. Why Apple does not default to guid I can't get.

But my other was is ruined. The one I redid with encryption for mac journaled.
I does not offer any of the nice options as before. any clue?
Only offers to partition in two.

Above the partition map, there is that popup that lets you choose the number of partitions. If it says "current", then the partitions can't be adjusted. This is unintuitive. You must click the popup and set it to (in your case) 2 partitions, even if the drive already shows 2 partitions. Once you do this, you can adjust the partitions as desired.

You can't ruin a drive using software. Your drive is still good, we just have to figure out what's blocking you. Chances are the above solution will work.

thanks reader, I went to genius bar and he ever said it was odd that it was only allowing me 2 partitions. I was about to order a new one from BH, and sales guy said should be able to erase everything, so I tried again, and I'm ok.

Genius bar guy said it should default to GUID, now it does, why it did not before he thought was odd, but it caused all this grief!

New HDs seldom come completely blank. The factories pre-format them with Master Boot Record scheme, so they're friendly to new Windows users.

OS X will default to GUID scheme for a blank HD. Otherwise, it defaults to not modifying the existing partitioning scheme.

Yeah, it did not default to Guid, which caused the chaos. I did not go to options, yet later it said, "need guid"
