In a blog post pointing out some of the issues surrounding Angry Birds purveyor Rovio, the company's outgoing CEO announced that the game maker will shed 130 people in an effort to reduce costs. The layoffs are all in the company's home country of Finland, and represents 16 percent of the company's total workforce.

Calling the layoffs a result of "assumptions of faster growth" than reality delivered, CEO Mikael Hed wrote that the company is still "in a good place to reignite growth." The company announced in April that it had reaped annual profits of $34 million, down more than 50 percent from 2012.

Angry Birds was released in the early days of the iOS App store, in December 2009. The title is actually the company's 52nd game, and has been downloaded more than a billion times, with paid downloads reaching 25 percent of the total. The company also publishes titles from other developers, with limited success. The company has 11 Angry Birds-related titles, with a handful of others on various app stores. An animated feature film is in development.

Once I saw what they'd done to Angry Birds Rio - filled it with intrusive ads and bait - I knew the company was desperate for revenue. No one hoses a good paid game like that unless the company is being run by bean counters. It's focusing on the bottom line not the top line first.

Rovio is a one-hit wonder that just milked that hit for all it was worth, and then some. Actually in all fairness, they do have some other good games (I never cared much for Angry Birds). Tiny Thief is a wonderful adventure/puzzle game that I would rank as one of the better mobile games out there. Ditto for Icebreaker. It's a shame that these don't appear to have reached the mass appeal that they truly deserve, but maybe it's for the best, seeing how out of control AB got.
