I have been throwing around an idea for another note taking application. The market place is already littered with these kind of apps. But the market place for great note taking applications is wide open.

I am wondering what everyones opinion is on what makes a great note taking applicaiton great.

Personally I have been using a modified version of Hog Bay Notebook. Now that I got the interface to be more usable I love it. However, I think that it lacks some ease of use features.

You'll have your work cut out for you if you're going against OmniOutliner.

You should also take a look at iData, which is an excellent freeform database application. Any note taking application has to have a good searchable database application.

The searching side will HAVE to be a huge part of this concept.

I would love something as simple as the old OS 9 Notepad (Richard Schreyer's "Notes" is about perfect) but that could sync with my iPod notes.. and preferably using iSync instead of some separate step

Searchlight anyone?

Actually I think this space is pretty well populated at the moment - and OmniOutliner 3 will probably come out in the next few months... It might be better to focus efforts elsewhere.

Ted Goranson has been writing a series on outliner features, characteristics, needs, legacy apps, and the future of outliners. He does this on ATPM. Here is the latest in the series. Look at the bottom of that page for the previous articles. Very worth while from somebody who knows what he is talking about!

Ignore the argumentative nature of this poster. He is old and can't engage in meaningful dialog
very long. Therefore, management asks that you at least humor him. Thanks.

A note taking application is only one of the concepts that have been beating me in the side of the head, we are currently working on an interesting spin on email clients... Should be pretty interesting to see what everyone thinks.
