Gotta say I knew what it was called as well, also that thingy that takes care of blocking your lungs or esophagus is called the epiglottis.

I did well in anatomy class.

All I can say is that you people are not representative of the average person and reader of Gary Larson.

There are lots of body parts (many are features of the surface anatomy of the body that we see every day) which people generally don't know the technical term for. Lacrimal caruncle, iliac furrow, natal cleft, gluteal crease, tragus, thenar and lunula are some examples. Uvula is another.

I'm no teenager, but I sure as hell don't look older than 40!
The former. In your picture, you look just a bit older than me, so about late twenties; yet, I’d always placed you somewhere in the 50–65 age range. So yes, your posts read like those of a sexagenarian.

Someone here (perhaps dcmacdaddy or OlePigeon?) said the same thing about me once, incidentally.

Lacrimal caruncle, iliac furrow, natal cleft, gluteal crease, tragus, thenar and lunula are some examples.
I know none of these, though I can guess at their general location in the body (at least some of them): lachrymal caruncle must be in the eyes; iliac furrow must be around the pelvis somewhere; natal cleft—actually, I did know that one, the popularly termed ‘arsecrack’; gluteal crease must also be buttock-related; tragus and thenar, no idea; lunular must be something half-moon-shaped, but what exactly it is, I don’t know.

How’d I do?

And the one a bit farther down, which takes care of blocking the air stream to/from your lungs via your vocal chords is the glottis, which blocks the air stream by pressing together the arytenoid cartilages. And if you

I did terribly in anatomy class—but I do know my phonetics.

(Actually, I never took an anatomy class, but I’m sure I’d do terribly if I did.)

Edit: “And if you” what? I just noticed I’d left half a sentence in here. I have no idea what I might at some point have wanted to say, so it probably wasn’t important. Huh.

Well done.

The lacrimal caruncle is the little red, fleshy protuberance in the corner of your eye; the iliac furrow (also called Apollo's belt) is either of two grooves that run from the hipbone to the groin (mostly a feature of the male anatomy, particularly prominent in guys who work out a lot, and loved by women—and some men—who refer to it lovingly but crudely as a "highway to heaven"); the gluteal crease is the horizontal crease under each of the buttocks; the tragus is the little triangular protuberance of the external ear; the thenar is the fleshy ball of your palm at the base of your thumb; the lunula is the half-moon-shaped white part of your fingernail.

If your guesswork was based entirely on cognates and etymology, I'd say that you know your cognates and your etymology.

One of my favourites, which I forgot to mention, is the "philtrum": the vertical groove under the nose running down to the top lip. The Greeks (God knows why) thought this was the most erogenous part of the human body, hence the word's connection to "philtre" or "love potion".

It was. And without sounding too much like a pompous git, I’d say I have a fairly decent grasp of both.

(I actually guessed at the gluteal crease—I couldn’t think of any other ‘creases’ that would relate to the buttocks, apart from the natal cleft, which had already been mentioned)

That sounds fun, however I don't think you could call this a sleeper. More like a nightmare.

Yeah, I actually liked them better than Frank's original Dune novel. My father in law insisted I read his collection, including Dune when it was time for it, and swore that I would like them. I really did like them quite a bit. I haven't been able to put my finger on it, but the prequels just read "easier" in my opinion...I was able to just breeze through them while getting all of the plot elements, well, um, "easier."

I actually have two: nigeljedi from 2001 (I believe) and harbinger75 from a bit later on. I really hate those names nowadays, so I wanted something different.

The first one is just, well, cheesy this many years later and the second one feels like I had to slap a number on the end because "harbinger" was already taken. I hate those kinds of usernames (PimpDaddyExcellence1793753967947, for example).

Get married there is a strong correlation between getting married and being obese

I know, sounds like old adage, but I just read in the WSJ print (can't find the link) that this has been confirmed by recent studies.

My three favorite Dunkels are Franziskaner, one from a smaller brewery called Hopf, and Paulaner. On most days, I give the nod to the Paulaner because it seems to have a slightly stronger sour note.

But it was Franziskaner that first brought me into Dunkel land.

Dunkle Weissbier are a nice thing.
I'm not always in the mood, but I prefer Dunkle Weissbier over most other darker beers.

I think half the reason I like DWs so much is that they remind me not to drink too much - they're too heavy to drink several liters worth. So I find myself drinking them more slowly, and appreciating the flavor as I work my way toward a perfectly healthy alcohol buzz.

Weissbiers don't seem to sit well with some people though. It's especially true for a few of my German friends; one of whom can't drink more than a bottle without getting bloated, and the other who swears he can't handle more than a bottle without throwing up and wont touch them again because of it. He doesn't even like the smell when I order one around him. And these are both guys who can drink 4 liters of Helles or Pilsner in short order without breaking a sweat.

That is awesome! How long did it take you? I've really wanted to do something like that at some point.

Well, it took me nearly a month but that was by choice. Took about three weeks making my way from Sydney to Melbourne, then did Adelaide to Perth in under a week because fly-season was making the Nullarbor far less hospitable (enjoyable) than I was hoping.

But yeah, I slept in the car the whole way. And yes I'm 6'5". Surprisingly not-horrible though; upon putting my entire body weight on it as a I cranked it down, I was able to get the passenger seat nearly flat across. And it held me like a hotdog as I slept.

Here's some shots of Oliver (named after Hammond's Opel from the Botswana special)

I did Oz for a year, from September '09 to August '10, during my two-year MacNN exodus. Before that I'd kicked around Europe for my three months, whereupon meeting several Aussie backpackers I got the Oz 1yr Work & Holiday visa in my head.

I spent most of the time working, first in Sydney for a few months then the super road trip to Perth... planted my flag there for about 5 months for some more working before returning to the states. Only stuck around for a week though before heading to Mexico for a month to get drunk, and then to Germany where I'd been in Munich from Oktoberfest up through last week.

I'm finally sick of traveling though and my last hoorah (for the moment) will be seeing New York City next week for about 5 days as I make my way back to Oklahoma. Then I'll get my shit out of storage, buy a cheap car and throw a dart at a map or something.
