This had been knocking around in my head for awhile already, but it didn’t assert itself strongly enough until today.

Non-shit captioning is our responsibility.

Pressure’s back on.

I manually captioned a trailer or two, for showing to a hard-of-hearing friend.

Transcribing the text isn't bad. But syncing text to speech is a pain in the butt. Professional captioners must have tools to help them.

Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m hoping we can crib the sync from the machine captioning.

I decided to look into the tools in Premiere. Not bad results. I’m a little surprised Adobe’s machine transcription is better than YouTube’s. Good enough I didn’t even bother with the option of stripping out all the audio which isn’t dialogue.

I’m cleaning that up first and then I’ll get to the sync, but sync seems like it’ll be the same. In need of some cleanup, but mostly usable.

Turns out that was all a waste. The default user setting for YouTube is “automatically display captions if the creator provides them”. No way we’re going to force people to opt-out of captions rather than opt-in.

I'd forgotten about that - I changed my user setting ages ago, so subs default to OFF.

A workaround. Two uploads - one with the subs, one without. Links to both in the descriptions. The subs one could be an unlisted video. That way, you serve those people who actually need English subs, plus those who just want them.

hmm ... still thinking here. What happens if you provide multiple subs tracks?

If YT defaults to subs=off (user must choose) then problem solved.
If YT defaults to playing the first subs track, you could make the first track a dummy one. Empty except for a brief credit at beginning and end.

Actually, the ideal is to provide multiple links. That way we can bake our own subs into the alternate versions and make them look pretty rather use YouTube’s over-intrusive captioning layer.

Unfortunately, it’ll probably only be English. Spanish, French, and Japanese would all be great, but to do it right would cost money we could probably spend better elsewhere.

The dummy file is also a brilliant idea though.

I think we could set the default language to English, have that be blank, and then put the subs under English (American).

First episode is live! I’m totally nervous! Candid opinions encouraged!

8 Minutes.

It references the Tiny Desk audition we did awhile back.

3 minutes, 8 seconds.

For my own candid opinion, this wasn’t originally supposed to be at the beginning, but so much of the project was unfinished it floated to the top as the best option. There are many things about it I’m not thrilled with, and it’s a rocky start. Likewise, the next couple episodes, while better, don’t seemingly advance anything.

It will be up to you to judge how much, but I assure you it begins to come together.

Fourth episode live! I thought it was going to be always MWF, but this week is TT.

Things finally start to pick up in this episode. We get the girls introduced, and they’re great.

5 minutes, 42 seconds. Language and violence.

Thank you!

I think that’s one of the best musical pieces in the whole thing. The singer is spectacular, and her voice is just perfect for the kind of songs my partner writes. Unfortunately, it’s a short one. This is the only studio recording of it, but there may be a live version (with different singers) buried somewhere. I’ll have to check.

That’s one of the pieces which got completely screwed. We needed a couple more shooting days. Those never materialized because my partner had multiple leg injuries, and it’s a half-mile walk through sand to get to the location. He would have needed a litter.

All three of the kids are fantastic. Sadly, the boy decided to hop off the acting train during COVID.

It looks like the girls are sticking with us for the next project. Our big worry is we make them pretty evil, and the respective sets of parents might have second thoughts now that they’re seeing it. They did get to read the script, and we discussed with them how the characters are utterly foul, but expectations and reality don’t necessarily match.

Point out to the parents that it's more fun to play the villain? Use Darth Vader as an example. See how many Vader lines they know vs how many Luke lines.
"I am your father", "I have decided to alter the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further", "If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador? (snap)", "I find your lack of faith disturbing".

You can also point out recent Halloween costumes - there were a lot of villains.

Everything you say is correct, but past experience tells us that regardless of how good someone is and that we’d kill to keep working with them, once they start edging towards the door, it’s best practice not to hinder.

That’s assuming we can detect it’s happening in the first place. No one ever formally quits working with us, they just have their availability dry up.

Episode five went up yesterday!

The cats are both dancers, so we took advantage and had them whip up a dance number.

Episode six is live!

This is one of the better ones, the girls are the best, but it unfortunately had to cram in a lot of exposition at the end..

Episode seven is live!

While there are minor things about it which irk me, this is one of the better ones. Another number by our knockout singer. This is also the point where if you’ve watched the previous episodes, it all begins to connect.

4 minutes, 11 seconds.

Mildly amusing, half-finished effects shot from this episode. If you look closely, you can see some Predator distortion, but the beauty of this type of effect is you can almost always get away with it.

Edit: the GIFfing hides it more.

Episode 8 live!

This is the episode for the song I mentioned I felt was the best. I was really hopeful we’d be able to knock this one out of the park, but it’s yet another example of COVID wrecking everything.

It was supposed to follow the traditional music video format in that you had a story cut against the singer singing. We only got the singer singing half

Once peace is made with the idea this is the only flavor in this meal, it’s not bad. It’s a good flavor. One of the few examples where I’m otherwise totally happy with my own work.

4 minutes, 34 seconds.

Don't forget the blooper reels, behind-the-scenes interviews with cast & effects people, etc. All the little extras that help DVDs sell. Perhaps even directory commentary track.

I quite like them all, but so short! I have questions about how it connects.

Who is this competing band? It looks like a rumble, but then they are doing a nice collab.

Thank you!!!

After the next episode, which features the girls, the remaining four begin to answer at least some of the questions.

As for the other band, they were doing a bit of a fake-out. They really just wanted to jam.

My ex’s sister is an expat. Before she split she took a driving “farewell” tour, and put our address down with the Post Office. This was 15 years ago and I still get her mail.

I get her offers to join the AARP, and I’d just fuckin’ laugh and laugh and laugh…

Until I started getting them.

AARP is a hard-fishing organization. I've gotten them occasionally since at least my 30s.

Gotta get more people on the monthly-payments treadmill. It doesn't matter how old they are - only if they have the money.

The only time my attention was grabbed wasn’t by AARP but a nursing home, where their ad was “blahblahblah, snacks anytime, bla…”

Wait. Hold the fucking phone. Snacks anytime?

FWIW, my wife and I both joined AARP last year. Membership gives you a deal on Medicare supplement plans (actual supplements, not advantage plans). Our membership cost is only $12/year for both of us.

Found out we lost one of the girls. Too busy with school and volleyball. I guess maybe there’s some possibility things could open up in summer.

Also found out Boris, the actor who drank the lemonade, died a few months ago. I don’t have any details on that. The way the math works out I have to imagine that means he never saw it.

Wow. Bad day.
