So Stephen Colbert is to replace the bitter, tired, unfunny Letterman. Mistake to put this one note comedian in that chair.

Well, I have a feeling any other show Colbert does will differ from the theme of Report. Fauxhawk is his current schtick, but he has more than one. I think.

Stephen Colbert is funny, smart, and comfortable interviewing just about anyone.
He's going to be great.

Letterman has definitely mailed it in for a good few years now....but come on, the man is a legend. And very funny. It's always been a tragifarce that he couldn't beat Leno....

I was thinking it'd be Stewart instead.

I remember Chuck Noblitt from "Strangers with Candy". Always a similar 'full of himself' type character.

I'm a little surprised. I mean, I couldn't see wanting to do the Colbert character forever. On the other hand, interviewing a never-ending parade of celebs seems beneath Colbert (or at least mind-numbing). The ridiculous upgrade in money was probably enough.

I don't think Stewart has any interest. He was in the mix in the 90s and ended up at the Daily Show which ended up being a much better fit.

Stewart does much better interviews with book authors and politicians. His celeb interviews can be fun, but are mostly in the "ha ha, you are plugging a movie, lets make fun of it" buddies thing.

The thing with Stewart is there's not much more he can accomplish with TDS. OTOH, Colbert still has lots of gas with his character.

He just directed a movie last summer.

That too. Long vacations imply you are far along in the arc of your job.

With evidence for my point.
How is "he just did something else" pointing at him wanting to stay?

Do you think CBS would let him leave for two months to direct a movie he wanted to make?
You're concluding that him branching out somehow means he'd like to do more of the same in a different place.

I see hosting Letterman as a much different gig, so that qualifies as branching out to me.
But I understand the argument it's not.

Oh, it's different in that'd it'd be much less political, but honestly, I don't think the political aspect of the Daily Show is what wears on Stewart and I don't see him as craving more interviews with people of less substance.
I'm not sure what you think it is that Jon Stewart craves, but I don't see how CBS could fulfill it.
