The PS3 arrived a bit ago and I'm putting it through its paces. Pretty good so far, although I did discover that apparently one of the component inputs on my TV isn't compatible with the higher resolutions for some reason. Not sure what the deal is there, but I did get a bit of a scare when I hooked up the PS3 to that one and wasn't able to go higher than 480p. More impressions after a bit.

Your TV doesn't do 720P right?

No, it does, that's why it was confusing. I'm currently running the PS3 in 720p, but it wouldn't work through one of the other inputs.

OK, a few random impressions on the PS3. It's a nice looking system, if a bit bulbous. It's quiet, but does get somewhat hot (or at least the exhaust vents expel warm air -- I'm not sure that the system itself actually gets that hot). Aside from the problem I mentioned above (which I believe is specific to my TV, since I now recall having a similar issue when hooking up my original Xbox via component cables. I guess I should look into the specs of my TV and see if there is an explanation.
Right now I've only really played Resistance, but it's pretty impressive. I actually prefer the graphics to those of Gears of War, mostly because Gears of War is very monochromatic -- everything looks kind of gray, while the graphics in Resistance seemed a bit more balanced and realistic. Of course both are very good, and I do think that GoW may be the superior game, simply because Resistance seems to be more or less a traditional shooter without much in the way of gameplay innovation.
I also downloaded and played the Motor Storm demo. I had played it at a store kiosk before, so I knew what to expect, but it was more impressive on my big TV. Playing it in first-person view, as opposed to the view where you can see your car on screen, made it a lot more exciting. I did seem to go flying off of cliffs with alarming frequency, but it's pretty impressive. It's too bad that Sony felt it necessary to build up hype with those unrealistic videos they showed at E3.
The Talladaga Nights Blu-Ray disc looked good. Maybe not breathtaking, but you could certainly see a bump in clarity as compared to a normal DVD. I plan to rent some Blu-Ray movies from Netflix and I might buy a few if I can get good deals by combining the $10 rebate forms that came with the PS3 with the $20 off of $50 Google checkout discount at Buy.com. But I don't plan to buy a lot of movies just yet.
I played a PS2 game (Destroy All Humans) just to see how it worked. It seemed fine. No problems that I could see. I have a PS2 memory card adapter on its way to me, so I'm going to hold off playing any more games until I can use my saves. (This is one area where Microsoft really dropped the ball.)
Next, I plan to put some music and video files onto an SD card and try reading them through a USB card reader.

Which USB card reader are you using?
I finally got Crash Bandicoot and Tekken to download and install. Took FOREVER. It turns out one of my 1GB memory cards is dead. The PSP, Mac, and PC don't like it. I have no idea why, but now I'm out a 1GB card .

On the left?... nope...I thought you liked the Wii?
You get an E for effort though + you get a cupcake as a reward!
Although Kiwi does seem to agree with you...

Ok at 9pm the firmware update downloaded and installed 1.11 now it tells me 1.13 is out. Is this old news and it has to do updates one after another or did 1.13 come out in the 3 hours I've had it?

Yeah, I just tried accessing the Playstation store and it told me I needed another update (just did one a couple of hours before). So I guess it just came out since we got ours... Sounds like a killer update. I'm downloading it now.

So far, all I have tried is the crappy little reader that came with the Kingston 2GB SD card I bought recently. It seems to work just fine. I also have a multiformat one that I will try later. I tried copying some videos and music files to the SD card from my Mac. The videos were encoded for the iPod in h.264 using handbrake and worked fine. I also tried a very large (around 1GB) video of The Empire Strikes Back, but it said that it was not a supported format. Don't know if the bit rate or resolution were too high or what. The music files were AAC encoded with iTunes. Also worked fine.

From reading the rest of the thread, it seems that much of this was just uninformed speculation by people who didn't really know what they were talking about. You can now pair the Blu-ray remote with the PS3 (although the actual remote isn't available yet) and I guess the backup thing is new, but there doesn't seem to be support for upscaling 720p to 1080i, you can't play music in the background of games, and it's unclear if any new video capabilities have been added to the browser (Youtube was always usable). It may just be mostly a bug fix/security update after all.

I didn't want playing music in the background for GAMES, I just wanted it so that I can start up a CD and not be stuck in JUST the CD menu while listening to it. I wanted to move around the menus and such, especially when doing slideshows.

I was about to ask if icruise is the "All your base are belong to us" guy, but the chances are that whoever that was is lives on the other side of the pond.
I also wonder how many people have made that comment to icruise.

I'm freelance, which allows me to work at home.

Yeah never heard that one before... Seriously, though, in the 80s and 90s there were a lot of non-native speakers hired to translate things into English but that is mostly a thing of the past now. Most of the examples that people have of terrible translations are pretty old.

North America is Y Pb Pr over component. Europe is RGB. Dunno about HDMI.

I never said my TV doesn't support 720p. It does. I was asked if it ONLY supported 1080i which it does, it does NOT support 1080p. It was made before 1080p TVs were even made I believe.

This new Sony update does not fix the problems with TVs that can only accept 1080i signals.
All it does is ensure that the PS3 auto-switches to the best resolution possible (rather then having to go and do it manually all the time).

Come on. If it supports 720p then by definition it does not "only support 1080i." Surely you understood the thrust of my question.

Ok now I understand. I had also interpreted his post to mean it didn't support 720p, so I was confused as to why he was fine with Resistance.

Here is a PS3 question. If I play a DVD that is in 4:3 the PS3 is stretching it to widescreen. How do I keep it on 4:3 for those types of disks?

He probably read "only" as "merely" — as in, "can't do more than that." It is a bit ambiguous.

It SHOULD when playing 4:3 material.
I don't have the controller in front of me, but I think it's TRIANGLE, and then Screen Mode might be on the top row of icons.
