Recommend a good strategy game? (Not WarCraft)

I love the old turn-based war game, Strategic Conquest, but alas, it doesn't run natively in X and I refuse to install Classic on my Tibook just to run one game.
So, I'm looking for another strategy war game that runs natively in X...any advice? I like the slower, more thoughtful pace of StratCon, where you really have some time to lay out plans and make em happen (that's why I'm not considering WarCraft--already got it, too action-oriented).
Any help appreciated...

Very good question. I can't think of any turn-based strategy games for OS X.
In OS 9 you had Strategic Conquest (II), Empire Deluxe, Deadlock, etc...

You might try Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire, CivIII, or Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete. They are all turn based with a lot of strategy involved.

I second kdirector's recommendation of Alpha Centauri and Civ III. I've had Civ III since it came out, and it still manages to soak up hours at a time. They're not strictly military conquest games, but there's a TON of strategy. MOO3, when it comes out, looks to be really great.

Thanks, all. I borrowed Civ 3 from a friend to see how I like it. It's slow on my Ti800, but not unplayable. I'm still sort of figuring out how cities work, etc., but so far so good.

Regarding Civ 3 - Make sure you have quartz text rendering turned off. It slows down the game.

What about the Combat Mission series? Those are turn based tactics (sort of like a bridge too far...).

Add another vote for Alpha Centauri.
And if you like real time multi-object strategy, Total Annihilation Gold Edition, played at more difficult levels.

It does not run natively in OS X, but...
Master of Orion II is still one of my all-time favorite games -- and my favorite strategy game. It's like Civilization in space (in that it's entirely turn-based), except it makes much more sense overall and has more complexities (it's really rather overwhelming at first, but after a few games and a good reading of the instruction manual, you'll get it). Combat is also very cool, in that you totally design your army from the ground up. I've never seen a game with more complex unit creation. It's also fun exploring the galaxy and getting the Orion techs
MOO3 comes out for the Mac in Jnauary, BTW. Wahoo!

Be happy.

How about Warcraft?
Just kidding -- the best RTS is Total Annihilation.

If you like strategy with some elements of role-playing and a great story (and don't mind firing up OS 9 or Classic) I strongly recommend checking out the very original, innovative hybrid game King of Dragon Pass by A-Sharp.
If you're looking for Alpha Centurai or Civ... well, this is different. It is, though, a really wonderful, unique game -- utterly absorbing, quite challenging, and a huge amount of fun. (Oh, and it's only $20.)
It stuck me with me a long time after I won.

Freedom Force, coming out this holiday, also looks like fun.
It's supposed to be really good -- created, I think, by a studio consisting of people from Looking Glass, before it sadly left this earth.
Speaking of which, Shiny's Sacrifice (also only $20) is supposed to be a really interestin', gorgeous strategy game. It's real-time though, not turn-based.

I for one am holding out for MOO3. I played MOO1 to death, but never was that big of a fan of MOO2. MOO3 will rock.

So is Freedom force's combat mode similar to the warcraft style, pure RPG style (final fantasy,), or Zelda style where you can move around and be in control of the character? It looks pretty fun and I'm hoping its not a pure RPG.
