I want to build a pretty elaborate web site that features lots of database information--I want to be able to post news items over time, post pictures and videos in galleries, let users register and have their own mini blogs on my site, and also allow for powerful searches of the site's content. I also need my site to have its own unique, custom look--ie, beyond straightforward themes, and such.

I don't know much about web development, but am wondering if anyone can recommend a technology package to get this done? I have looked at open source products like Zope and Coranto, but am wondering if there are other things that make sense?

Naturally, I'd like to do this as affordably as possible, which is why I looked at open source systems with big communities behind them. And I don't plan on coding the site myself, obviously, but need to have a good idea of what kind of technology package we might use, so I can hire the person with the right skills!

Any help most appreciated! Thanks...

Take a look at Plone. I have never worked on one myself, but it sounds like it will do much of what you want.

I've heard good things about Plone. It's based on the Zope CMF, which is pretty nice as well. I worked in Zope at a job for 2+ years, so feel free to ask Zope questions if you have them.

Hi Arkham,

Do you know if Zope can work with Flash anims? Ie, can I have Flash graphics built into a site that's created with Zope?

Also, any public forums you can recommend to advertise for Zope/Plone programmers? I found a bunch of mailing lists, but they were generally oriented towards technical discussions.

Many thanks!
