Memorex 2x DVD-RW works fine in my 1.25 15" AlBook. Drive is UJ-816 with DXJ3 firmware.

Verbatim work for me on my firmware-upgraded PB17 revA 1 GHz. The discs were <$2 each at CompUSA last week.

Make sure it is a DVD-RW disc and not DVD+RW.

Because Apple neutered the drives all sort of incompatibility issues arise. Sometimes a disc works, sometimes it doesn't. That's what happens when hardware is unfairly hacked by a company that wants to tempt you with future upgraded models.

You might try restoring the ROM to the manufacturer's original. There's a link somewhere in this forum to a site that provides it. Can't guarantee all media will still work though.

Just like arekkusu, I use Memorex 2x DVD-RW just fine in my 1.25GHz AlBook. UJ-816 as well, default firmware.

But you must also consider that not all software will let you write to them: Toast, Finder and Disk Utility will, but iDVD for example will not.

Thought I'd piggyback on this old thread.

I'm looking for reliable DVD-R media for my PB (see sig) DVD-RW as well if possible but I'm trying to get some spindles and the problem is the majority of media out for -R is 8X speed.

I bought some Memorex DVD-Rs and its been nothing but errors. I searched here, in DVDhelp at apple's support blah blah and nothing.

As far as I know the UJ-816 does not need a firmware update.

Well, I went and bought some Fuji 8X DVD-R media and they worked.

The reason I purchased them is I had some Fuji DVD-RWs that I've been using with no problems, so with that being my only real reason for going with Fuji I'm happy.

Also Purchased a spindle of Apple DVD-Rs, kinda of expensive but I'm sure they'll work.

Anyone else with good or bad experiences?

That is the difference. They were competing standards (-R/RW from the official DVD standards organization, +R/RW from a group of manufacturers who got impatient at the former's slow pace at coming out with writable DVDs) that ended up coming out about the same time, and doing the same thing. The differences serve no purpose other than to confuse the market. Luckily, all new drives can write both kinds equally well, so it's becoming less of a problem.

I've been using Arita (Made by Ritek) DVD-R media, and I'm very pleased, both the 4x and 8x media. (though the 8x SD in my G5 only writes this media at 4x...)

You've used that media on a UJ-816 drive?

I use Staples brand DVD-R disks. They work perfectly. I haven't tried a DVD-RW yet, though.

Even with the un-gimped 2x Superdrive in the TiBooks and the AlBooks, they still can't write DVD+R/W Media. The UJ-816 Simply doesn't support those discs.

UJ-816 only supports writing to DVD-R and DVD-RW.

Reading DVD+R/W, I have no idea since I have not tried any of those discs (reading).

Before i flashed my firmware to the 2x burning i couldn't read the +R discs, but after the upgrade it did in fact read them, but it definately wouldn't write to them.

I'd love to help you but I live in Belgium, so I don't think you can go to the same store
But I buy them at some special computer events, where I buy them dirt cheap (meaning about 5USD for a 25-piece spindle, which I think is cheap in comparison). I'm very pleased, I hope you find them.
