Like others recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk felt compelled to walk back some harsh comments about Apple (which may -- or may not -- be a future competitor in electric vehicles) when critics pointed out that his comments were inaccurate. Musk appeared to be trying to unruffle feathers from Apple employees as well as executives with whom he has a relationship -- he and Apple's VP of Design Sir Jonathan Ive have been seen talking on a few occasions -- but may not have been successful.

As previously reported, Musk referred to Apple as the "Tesla graveyard" in an interview with a German newspaper, implying that only people who didn't make the cut at Tesla -- and certainly no-one of any importance -- has left the carmaker to go work for Apple. In fact, Apple has poached valuable employees from the Tesla, and Tesla has likewise recruited engineers from Apple, though the ratio and general trend of defections is not clear outside the boardrooms of the two companies.

Yo, I don't hate Apple. It's a great company with a lot of talented people. I love their products and I'm glad they're doing an EV.

Musk also made insulting comments about the iPad Pro, Apple's drawing stylus the Apple Pencil, and the Apple Watch -- the latter of which he took great pains to try and retract, but if his goal was to mollify Ive, he is unlikely to have succeeded. Musk dismissed the Watch as basically a toy, saying that by "version 3" it might be "compelling." Given that Tesla has not yet sold its 60,000th Model S after seven years, it could be argued that the public at large haven't found Musk's products very compelling either.

"Yo, I don't hate Apple," Musk tweeted in a series of posts apparently designed to soften the initial comments. "It's a great company with a lot of talented people." He added that he "loves" Apple products, and that he is "glad they're doing an [electric vehicle]." Later, Musk noted that "regarding the Watch, Jony & his team created a beautiful design, but the functionality isn't compelling yet. By version three, it will be." He did not address his comments about the other Apple products.
