I would get the 23" because I hate having to look across that gap for more windows and palettes, etc...

On the other hand, the pair of monitors would give you more pixels (at the admitted cost of the discontinuity).

I'd rather have the 23"
that being said, I have an 18" LCD and a week from now I'll be adding to that a 17" LCD.
it was far cheaper to do it this way.

20 inch and a second monitor. I find that when I work I want all of my primary monitor for workspace, and I end up showing/hiding my palettes a lot. When I have a second monitor I l keep all the palettes visible and have the primary workspace uncluttered.

I'd go for the 20" and 17" combo. Having one 23" is nice, but having one monitor for actual work and having a second monitor for your itunes, ichat, dvd, palettes, etc... is nice. I was thinking bout getting a 20" ACD or Dell but I find myself really content with my 17" Samsung as my main monitor and my 12" for all the other crap.

I also vote 20 &17 - currently running a 23 and a 15"ASD, looking to upgrade them both to new aluminum LCDs, 23 & 20. I'm totally stuck on dual monitors...

I have a 23" right now and want to add a smaller monitor sometime. I was kind of hoping for an aluminum 17" to go with the 23". Not sure if a 20" would look somewhat "lacking" next to the 23". It would be more obvious that the 17" is supposed to be a secondary monitor. But since they don't make a aluminum 17" I guess the point is moot.

I'd take the 23". I like one display, and I'm anal retentive enough that if I had two displays they would have to match. I had an ADC 23", and thought about getting a second display, but didn't want another ADC 23" display, didn't want to buy 2 new aluminum 23" displays, it was quite the quandry. Ended up buying the 30".

If I were you, I would save up the extra $200 and get dual 20" screens as compared to one 23" screen.
and then get a couple of these...

I believe that you could pull it off with the new monitors. Especially with the VESA mounts.

that's the only thing I didn't like about the old Apple LCDs... the bezel was just so damn thick!
so... I don't own one.

Be careful of the 23"s. I'd heard that some had a pink tint to them, but I figured that had been taken care of by now. I was in the Apple store not 2 weeks ago looking at monitors and 4 of the 5 23"s had a pink tint. I don't know if they were just old stock, but it seems like the store would have replaced them since they looked so bad, especially sitting right between a 20" and 30", which made the discoloration even more obvious.

Hrm. I guess for now I'll just keep the 20 and the 17. The cool thing is they're both exactly 17.3" tall, so it looks reasonably sweet. Course... it'll look 100X better once I get the new vid card.
