Greetings,

I got a used PB 15" 1.67gz G4 which I zeroed the drive intending to do a fresh OS installation. Unfortunately I left a music CD inside and now I can't eject it to plug in the OS install! Trying to boot it in firewire mode is failing, and so is booting it while pressing the trackpad button. I mean, the computer is not booting as it has nothing to boot from I presume. The disk drive does spin.

Advice?

I'm going to try putting the 1 gig memory stick back to the slot it was originally in, see if that does something. I had shifted it to the rear slot in expectation of a second stick I ordered.

Strange, it was the memory, it had to be in the closest slot. Got the disk out.

Attach an external disk drive and boot up off the external drive.

Wow--you got the disk out just 30 seconds before I posted!

How did switching the RAM help get the disk out?

The computer was making a strange beeping noise on start, I have never heard that from a Mac before. It must have been telling me of a RAM issue. Is the second slot bad? Or is it that in only one stick is present it must be in a particular slot? I don't know.

3 beeps at startup means that there is a RAM issue.

I bet the machine has a bad slot. My powerbook had to get a new logic board due to that issue.

Oh great, I hope not! I just paid $50 for a 1gig stick from OWC! Well I would complain to the previous owner, perhaps get a partial refund here.

If the 2nd slot has been unused for years, it can accumulate dust on the contacts. You may need to reseat the stick a few times, so it makes proper contact on all pins.

That was exactly the case, according to the original owner. I will try that when the new stick arrives. Thanks!

It might also be that the second slot was unused for years because the original owner discovered the (extremely common) issue described above and then decided to live with the limitation rather than invest $700 into a new MLB (assuming this 'Book isn't within the serial number range covered by Apple's extended replacement policy at the time).

Keep us posted.

Even better: compressed air in a can.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

15" PB lower RAM slot failure. Very common, there was a recall I do believe. I'm unsure if the replacement parts were modified to prevent the problem.

Confirmed that the lower slot is failing. Either it does not register the memory stick or it beeps on startup as a RAM failure. Going to keep on trying but I'm intrigued by the recall. I will pass by the Apple Store today and see if that recall is still in effect!

The repair extension ended July of 2008.

I don't think you'll get any satisfaction, but it won't hurt to ask.

Yep, while sitting at the Apple store waiting for my turn at the Genius Bar, I browsed their forums and found the repair program ended in 2008. I'd still like to call them and see what they say, but I doubt I will be satisfied! Time to return the memory stick and deal with 1 gig of RAM.
