Now this is no iPod killa, Mostly because of cost and because it is not iTunes friendly.
At any rate, this is one incredible phone. Stunning, if this had Apples logo on it we would go bonkers.
I am sure that within 2 years the iPod will look much like this. I know people are going to yell and scream that it need the scroll wheel but it could easily be put on the touchscreen as recent patents show. This phone has an OS that runs tons of apps, the storage is 4 Gigs, the phones music player looks just like an iPod and it plays videos/games.
What else could you ask for other than Apple software integration, oh.. and in white or black?

I like it. But it seems to suggest that you have to use bluetooth headphones with it. Is this true?
I'd sell a kidney if it had 802.11b/g.

No way, right now all the walkman phones are wired, you just plug this adapter into the USB port in the bottom.
Sony just came out with a wireless earphone today.

It does look cool, and no doubt runns apps quite well, but it all depends on storage. If someone made a super duper small and cheap 60 GIG hard drive, I could see something like this happening. Until then, probably not.

It's got UMTS, so it'd make a great pocket modem (200-300 kbps).

The pluses of the iPod's scroll wheel were mostly because of a lack of a touch screen in my opinion. However, if this allows touch navigation for scrollbars and such, I think the UI would be just as intuitive / quick to navigate as the iPod's.

I just saw it advertised on "Boston Legal." It's awesome, cool at $199.

Seriously, it probably requires a 2-year contract or something with Cingular.

wdlove, are you sure it's this particular phone? I thought this phone wasn't going to be available until 3Q?

Also, this phone will probably cost more than that with a 2-year contract. UIQ phones ain't cheap (though this'un cuts out a lot of the features of the new p9xx's, but still: 4GB flash memory..), and neither are Walkman phones. I wonder if they'll add 850 to it for a North American release?

It isn't what he saw.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure wdlove must have seen one of those Motorola SLVR ads that have been running nonstop around here. I hate Cingular. I hate Motorola. I woulndn't mind a new SE phone, but I think I'd prefer the w800i over that w950.

Hmm, perhaps. Who in the US uses 3G? Just Cingular? Cingular is also 850 as far as I know.

Verizon and Sprint both have 3G networks up and running, but neither uses UMTS. In other news, Cingular just announced availability of global UMTS roaming.

I'm no expert on cellular technologies, so you'll probably want to Google for more information.

Aah, now this is a cell phone I could go for. It was only a matter of time before someone made a phone that looks like an iPod nano. Ironically, it was Sony.

10 hours in a spec means 6-8 hours for reals. I'm sure once you start yakkin' things take a hit. I wouldn't be surprised if the thing has a useful life of only 5 or 6 (I'm being generous). 6 hours standby? No thanks.
Like you said. In two years it'll be worked out.

The battery is rated at 10 hours PLAYBACK, not phone time. Sony's phones are the best on the market with their battery life. The standby time is probably a week and talk 8 hours. It also charges through USB.
My nano never lasts more than 6 hours.

I'm looking forward to when everything is like my Nikon D70, which I only have to charge between once every couple of weeks and once a month, unless I really go all-out on picture taking for a couple of days. It's unbelievably freeing to just not have to worry about the battery at all.
My 3G iPod (almost 3 years old now... I still remember the 5/2/03 launch event for them) still gets surprisingly good battery life, considering its age. At least 5 hours on a charge. Granted, it's not what it used to get, but most people with these iPods are on their second battery by now, if not getting close to a third. The only problem with it now is that it's got 53mb free, and only around 80% of my music is on it. time for a 5G

What I could imagine Apple doing if they were going to make a phone/iPod would be to have the click wheel be on a flip plate, so that you would flip down the scroll wheel section to reveal a keypad, and probably a mic to talk into as well.

Oh god no. I think they would just use touchscreen which this phone already has.
I mean people were able to scroll before the wheel you know.
This phone also has a wheel on the side.

Have you used a click wheel iPod on a regular basis? You can't do that with a touch screen, just doesn't work. A slider or flip for exchanging your interface is better. Better to have two devices in one than to have one doing everything. I bet you'd say then you could watch movies on your touch screen... Touch screens are not the answer to everything.

Holy smokes! It seems Canada starts testing HSDPA in March and for consumers by the end of the year! My network provider also!
I might be able to get this thing afterall.

Rogers announces HSDPA and eclipses competitors with new speeds in the battle of the wireless networks
Accelerated launch of HSDPA will make Rogers the fastest mobile wireless
data network in Canada
BARCELONA, Feb. 13 /CNW/ - From the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona,
Rogers today announced it will complete trials for its next generation voice
and data network, High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), earlier than
anticipated in March 2006, which means it expects to be ready to offer the
revolutionary HSDPA speed advantage to customers as early as Fall 2006. The
launch of HSDPA service will make Rogers the fastest mobile wireless data
network in Canada - and among the first wireless carriers in the world to
deploy this latest generation of GSM technology, the dominant world-wide
standard for mobile wireless communications."

No matter how sexy the device, no iTunes support means no deal. In a weak moment, I was an early adopter on Sony Ericsson's W800i. The OS on the thing is slick. The features are great. The sound is on-par with my iPods... But dragging and dropping is just a pain in the ass. And using 3rd party software, like Dreamsicle, is just dumb. Not to mention the fact protected AACs won't play. Forget it. Nothing to see here.

They have software that works with iTunes perfectly, no drag and dropping.

If it's Dreamsicle you're referring to, it works, but I wouldn't call it "perfectly." And as I said, no protected AACs. Definitely a hot-looking phone with a great feature-set for those that don't care about such things... It's just not for me.

If you've either stayed with iTunes 5 or haven't bought anything since 6, you can use jhymn to un-DRM any of your protected AACs and put 'em on a Sony Ericsson phone (or whatever else out there plays unDRM'ed AAC)
SWG might be referring to SyncTunes or iTunesMyWalkman. I think the latter just lets you maintain a playlist in iTunes and uses AppleScript to sync it to the phone very easily.

No that is not the app I am talking about. Protected AAC's not playing is Apples fault and no-body else's.
I think you need to re-read the first post of mine. I am not saying this is an iPod killer, I am saying it is probably what the iPod will evolve into. This thing has everything but tight iTunes integration and the Apple logo.
Obviously when the iPod looks like this it will work with iTunes to your satisfaction.
