That one you linked to is outdated, the new iBook, or at least the ones released before the 800 model needed a new video out cable, well actually they needed two cables I believe.

you need an adaptor similair to the video out adaptor that came with the ibook. the 700/800s dont have an AV port like the 500s, the port is audio only. the adaptor plugs into the video out slot and has an S video and RCA out I believe. its on apples website for like 20 bucks.

That's not a problem, just get one of these audio cables for the headphone jack:

Not at all as cool and convenient as the original video cable, but I don't mind making that trade for S-Video.

Keep the rubber side down!

Look down one port; there's your audio out.

You need an 1/8th mini to RCA, just like the one posted below.

Monster Cable makes one that's an "i" type of product.

Does anybody know if you can use the new adapter to get S-video on the old 500 MHz iBook?

i use a rca cable w/ video (yellow, red, and white) on mine just fine...i don't have s-video input on my tv anyway...

i just pulled the cable apart a little so i could plug in both the video and and the audio (got a rca to mini jack converter on there)...one less cable to carry around...

Well, as you have figured out - it is not possible.

I wonder why Apple changed the AV port on the later iBooks?

I know that on my early iBook, when I used the headphone set that I bought in Japan, the iBook thought that I was plugging in a monitor and the display would go wiggy for a second or two. Perhaps the plug on the Japanese headphones was just a little bit too long?

This also happens occasionally to me on earphones I bought here in the U.S. Maybe the triple jack isn't designed quite as well as they would like...

My new iBook is coming today (yay), I'll do some cable swapping while I still have both iBooks and try to remember to report the results...

That happened to me many times on my iBook 500. I never could figure out why that would happen. A few times it even reset my brightness really low.

Does anyone know if this will work?

My guess is no, but has anyone tried it?

BTW, I tried a VGA to S-video cable from a 3rd party card and it didn't quite work with my older iBook 600 because it seems the card wouldn't provide the right frequency for the TV. I could see bits of the image, but it was all scrambled.

No. It will not work. There is no s-video signal output from the original dual USB (500 MHz iBook). The only TV out signal was composite through the headphone jack, as was stated above. The new Radeon iBooks output s-video and composite through the mini-VGA port, also as stated above.
