although this has been covered in many threads before already i will add my 2 cents again...win 2000, or one of the older less-bloated ones like 95 or 98se.

WIn 98SE is the fastest in emulation, otherwise 2000 is your best bet. Esp. on an iBook. Use 98 if you can get away with it, but lots of software these days is 2000+.

Do not use ME, XP, unless you really have to for some reason (and there shouldn't be any).

Another chime-in for Win2000. It's the best combination of speed an features to work in VPC.

At the rate that VPC 7 is being released you never know. Even though they say this fall, We could see it when Longhorn is released.

I have had several Win OS's on VPC, my experience is;

If you can go Win 95, by far the fastest, and capable of running the vast majority of software that you may use.

If you need a modern OS go for Win 2000, I use this occassionally.

I would completely avoid Win XP , and this is only my opinion but I would not bother with Win 98, I find Win 2000 is no slower than 98 in VPC, strange but that's my experience.

On my iBook G3 500 2000 is significantly slower than 98. FYI.

I use NT 4

Just as fast as Win95, but with the basic guts of Win2k and WinXP

That must hurt - OS 10.2 is slow enough on my iBook 500!

XP.

Nothing will run as fast as it will on a PC. You can make XP as fast as 2000 if you turn all the fancy-schmancy effects off... there's a mode for "fastest performance."

XP has the most drivers and compatiblity... I can't imagine installing Win98 in this day and age.
