I really enjoyed using VirtualDubMod for quick avi editing without having to re-encode. I found that quicktime does something similar, however I noticed that it saves it as an mov instead of the original container. Can this just be renamed back to avi to be played on a Windows machine?

Are there any other programs that can trim movies without re-encoding? Perhaps with features to detect fade outs and such- similar to virtualdub?

Thanks!

There is actually a way that you might save it as AVI. If you download MPEG Streamclip, it should come with an extra Quicktime component called Save-as-AVI. Put this in Home/Library/Quicktime and you should have the option to export to an AVI just copying the streams in the MOV.

This might not be 100% reliable, though. I suggest you try playing it back in multiple different players (Quicktime, VLC etc) to check that it works.

I'd recommend Avidemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/) I've used it for some time and it's worked well for simple editing.
