Apparently the nose-wheel is damaged and they are about to try an emergency landing. Anyone heard anything more?

The nose-wheel has twisted 90° out of angle. Just took off from LA heading for JFK. Dumping fuel over the ocean now.

They're not dumping. Apparently that plane is incapable of it. So they're just circling around burning fuel.

From what I've been reading, it's an A320 flown by Jet Blue. Flight 292 if you want to track it. Isn't there a dashboard widget for that?

Did they re-route the plane all the way to LAX so they could attempt landing in daylight?

As far as I know, Jet Blue doesn't fly out of LAX. Check Long Beach (I know they fly in/out of there, as I've flown them from LB). It look slike they were rerouted after take off to Burbank to attempt the landing. Some of the news sites are reporting conflicting info about what's going on. The FAA says they are dumping fuel, but someone above said that's not possible on that model plane. I guess we'll have to just wait and see.

My bad, Jet Blue flies into both Burbank and Long Beach, so it could be either one of those. Reuters says the flight originated in Burbank.

It's going to take one more circle before attempting to land. That's the latest I've heard.

Airbus planes can't 'dump' fuel normally so they are actually burning it off. Thats why they have been up there so long. A fuel dump wouldn't have taken this long.

Rex Kramer: Striker, have you ever flown a multi-engine plane before?
Ted Striker: No, never.
Rex Kramer: [com is accidently left on] Sh*t. It's a God damn waste of time. There's no way he can land this plane.

Wonderful landing. Watched it live on MSNBC.com. I really thought that front gear would collapse but it didn't. Amazing.

Remarkable:

1) Remarkably smooth landing. Excellent result. Kudos to the crew, and it's great that everyone is safe.

2) Remarkably obnoxious thread posters, considering the emergency.

Good ole. 'Canyon Blue'. I see that plane all the time when I'm at work at Oakland Airport. Usually comes in a few times a week actually.

Im a pilot our saying goes, "Any landing is a good landing if you walk away from the plane, if you can reuse the plane its a great landing." Thats the motto for my flight school.

In case no one else mentioned it, it took off from Burbank.

I live within a mile of LAX, but I couldn't get there in time to watch it so I didn't even bother going.

I wonder how many folks took that flight so they wouldn't have to deal with LAX.

As usual, the idiotic media hails the landing as "extraordinary". There was nothing about this landing any different from most. As a former airline Captain I can say this.

You touch down on the main gear first, then the nose. Wow. Very standard. In this case, the idea was to hold off the nose but not too long so as not to let is slam into the pavement.

The Captain, not the "pilot", did a job that I would expect him to do. He followed basic procedures for burning off fuel and getting visual inspections of the gear. A clean runway and good weather also helped his chances of making a "perfect" landing.

He was not alone. There is another "pilot". He/She is the First Officer. We will never hear his/her name. There was also the cabin crew. They did everything they were supposed to do, except the part where they yell "Brace" and scare the crap out the passengers.

The only time I had an emergency when I flew it was a gear problem in Detroit and it was uneventful, and people getting off the plane kept clapping and it was quite silly. I don't consider myself a hero or anybody else doing their job.

Glad the JetBlue nose strut held in place. Worst case would have been a partial collapse of the strut and contact with the runway for the lower nose fuselage. Contracy to popular assumptions, this could not have become some horrible scenario (Toronto accident recently) where the plane breaks apart and the whole enchilada catches on fire.
