Anyone care to post benchmarks from a Intel Mac with time against CS2?

Important: You must enter your CS2 serial number on Adobe's web site which will in turn give you a working CS3 serial, do not enter it in the beta program.

I was wondering why I didn't see anything else out here about it... I thought it was posted tonight. Sorry, guess I'll try and top this tomorrow afternoon and see what we have (though I'm sure it will be posted in separate threads in the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro forums)

Set your alarm for sometime tomorrow afternoon, bookmark the Adobe Labs web site, and kick everyone off the Internet because it's a big download (about 355MB for the Windows version and 684MB for the Mac since it has both the PPC and Intel builds on the disk image). People on 56k should have it by Spring, easy.

I thought Universal Binaries weren't twice as big because only the executable needs to be duplicated and all the support files can be the same...

Here's an interesting thing I read. It'll run for two days unless you have a valid serial number from either Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Creative Suite 2, Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio, Adobe Design Bundle, Adobe Web Bundle or Adobe Video Bundle.

I have a valid Photoshop CS license (not CS2). Am I really SOL for this beta??

Yes, in theory a Universal app could/should be not that much bigger than the normal size of the PPC/Intel build. However some of the other application vendors are choosing to build 2 seperate builds (Intel only / PPC only) for the reasons of optimizing and final build size[VLC, Firefox, etc]. I remember reading that some of the Firefox builds it had to deal with moving compilers so the choice is the make a Universal binary by 'messing' the PPC and Intel build together, basically ending up with a double in size file. This sounds like what Adobe has done. I'm guessing guessing that Adobe choose to split the builds down the middle, building a seperate PPC / Intel build as the PPC build may only live for 1 or 2 life cycles (that is, CS4 or CS5 may be Intel only). The SSE vs. AltiVec code may also have added to the size differences as well as the sales potention of CS3 to non-Intel machines. If you think about it, current G5 users are using CS2 perfectly fine and have little incentive to upgrade. When they do upgrade, it would be cost efficient to just move to an Intel Mac because they will get 2-5 or more times the speed increase moving to CS3. So I'm guessing the it wouldn't be unreasonable to say that CS3 maybe the last PPC build for Photoshop for Adobe.

And here is a comparison of CS2 and CS3 on a Mac Mini 1.66 and a MacBook Pro 2.0. Needless to say, the Intel Native version sure gives a nice perofrmance boost:

So far this looks very impressive. It launches in less than 4 seconds on a MBP 2.33 with 2gbs ram. Filters seem very fast too. More testing to do...

MacBook 2GHz Core Duo - 2GB Ram, scratch disk is the startup disk

Launch times
CS2 - 50secs - cold start
CS2 - 15sec - after it's be launched already

CS3 - 21sec - cold start
CS3 - 4secs - after it's be launched already

speeds using the test file and Radial blur in the Power Mac thread

CS2 - 57secs

CS3 - 36secs

the speed is about the same on a cold start and a relaunch.

not a bad improvement

I think you need CS2 full, not an upgrade (if that's your case)

Why is everyone comparing it against CS2 on an Intel Mac. Of course it's faster.

let's see CS3 compared on a G5 vs. an Intel.

Adobe Labs - Adobe Photoshop CS3
Awww, I was trying to insert my CS2 code when prompted within CS3. After I re-read the Photoshop CS3 page, I saw the link to enter my CS2 code on Adobe's site where it spit out a perfectling working CS3 serial. I'm good to go now.

Thanks!

You can still try it out for two days.

I have to say, I'm impressed that they've found a way to make the interface feel even more bloated, annoying and un-Mac-like. It is faster than CS, though, even on a G5.

I'm rather sad too...Adobe used to be very Mac-like during the System 7 days.

Photoshop fit right it with the System 7 GUI. It was a marvel. Then Mac OS 8 came a long...and PS looked a bit weird but it wasn't so bad.

When OS X came around, Photoshop looked like some lost System 7 artifact. And now it just looks like some Windows app...with perhaps the Aqua document window as one of the very few remaining UI element that is native to OS X and some System 7 crap thrown in for good measure (stopwatch for example.)

I bet Adobe has decided Lua is the way to the future. All the niceties that Apple provides for the GUI are left ignored by Adobe.

It's really sad.

Yeah, here I was hoping that the intel switch would force them to actually rewrite and un-bloat the thing, maybe even steal some of the Macromedia interface nicities, but alas, they've bloated it even more.

Runs perfect, though.

No Universal Binary would seem to suggest no use of xCode wouldn't it? At least as a possibility? Or perhaps to make debug easier?

You think not allowing you to use a CS license is bad? Try this: I have a CS2 license for Windows, since I didn't see the point in paying for CS2 for Mac when none of it would run natively. If you try and use your Windows CS2 serial number to generate a CS3 beta serial, you get a CS3 serial that only works on Windows.

Thanks, Adobe...

No only do you need a CS2 license, but it has to be a full CS2 license, not an upgrade. That sucks.

On PPC at least, a one long-standing CS2 bug has not been addressed. With cursors set to precise, make a selection with the lasso tool. With the cursor inside the selection area, hold down the option key to subtract from selection. Cursor disappears.

Same here. I own CS as well, never upgraded to CS 2 because it didn't have any features that I needed. I will definitely buy CS 3. Why doesn't Adobe just let us pre-order CS 3 and include a permanent activation code for the beta? I would do it!

Gah, this is frustrating. I'm intent on somehow finding the cash for CS3 when it comes out, but I certainly can't afford to buy CS2 right now, and why would I have when CS3 was right around the corner, and CS2 won't work on my Intel Mac! Sigh... if only serial numbers fell from the skies.
