My dock is getting in the way of some of my programs, I know I can hide the dock, but I would rather have the visual input that the dock currently provides (open programs, etc.) but in a location that isn't as disruptive. The menu bar would be ideal but I haven't had any success in my search.

You can place the dock at either side, and have it start at the left, right, top or bottom.

Unsanity do lots of nice toys that may help.

Maybe something like ASM?

If the guy that did ASM redoes Ambar, that's exactly what you want.

Thanks everyone for their input, Ambar is exactly what I'm looking for, I've tried the custom pulldown menus provided by Unsanity and other publishers, but I find it a pain if I'm switching back and forth constantly between apps. I think if the dock was in the menubar, it would involve a single click to go back and forth between apps.

Having the dock on the side of the screen doesn't help either as it tends to take up space where my pallettes can be.

So I guess, for now I have to wait for Ambar, unless there are other software solutions?

I really like using the menu bar. I wish someone would develop MenuBar+ that would add a second bar under the first. A lot of my menu symbols disappear when I open an app with lots of options. Up to the challenge anyone? I would definitely pay for something like that.
W....liar or idiot? Pick two.

Okay this is what I'm looking for, except this app isn't for OSX. Something that displays the app icons in the menubar, no menus to pull down. There's a good pict of what I'm trying to describe:

okay, a dropdown menu might be better...that is ONE ugly app, and where will you fit all of that?

i use moofmenu, there are plenty of good menubar launchers out there (and i often hide the dock)...

just my 2cents...

funny, i just rethought this this afternoon. since all my open apps are in the dock, and i generally leave most of the open...i just turned off moofmenu and am running from the dock again!

it is a great tool (but i prefer mine on the side of the screen...dont want to lose height on my powerbook workspace)
