Wrong. Edge is unlimited on AT&T's plans (unlimited data).

Thanks,
Then what is the story with a man going to Europe and being hit with insane roaming charges primarily for accessing the internet/email?
Or is this myth?
Thanks

If the person in Europe is accessing the internet and email over a European wireless phone network, then they are neither using a free wifi hot spot, nor using AT&T's native network. They will be charged roaming fees. Data roaming is roaming. Just because they may never make or receive a voice/text call doesn't mean they were not data roaming.

Yup. Doesn't the newest firmware let you turn Edge off completely?

I just set up an iPhone in Germany (imported, jailbreaked, and using anySIM) on the O2 network. First thing ... this phone is simply amazing ... I don't care if I end up stuck with firmware 1.0.2 for the life of the phone! Also saved a fortune: paid 310 Euro, instead of 399 Euro (which it will be here, when it arrives), and bi-pass the costly monthly subscription. Yeah

Back on topic: because I don't have a flat data rate for EDGE/GPRS, one has to be careful: otherwise, as soon as you're away from WiFi, it will automatically connect using GPRS, which costs. The easiest way to stop this is to edit the APN, simply add a few nonsense letters to the end, then it won't be able to connect until you change it back. Perhaps someone could write a cute little app to do this more elegantly, though. Hint hint.
