These ethernet over powerline adapters go into a power saving mode when they detect no ethernet activity. The problem is that if a Mac connected to them goes to sleep, they go to sleep, with the result that the Mac is no longer "visible" on the network -- so they can't be woken up remotely for file sharing, screen sharing, etc.

It's crazy.
