I just replaced my fans (so much quieter, thank god) and I opened my case and man was it warm. Not sure if it was warmer than normal...but I loaded up temperature monitor, and it said both hard drives were 50 degrees C, or 122 degrees F.

Seems kinda hot... so I left the case open, and ..it's been like 15 minutes, they haven't gone down one bit. My computer is a quicksilver, if that matters. How hot do your drives run? I just want ot make sure I don't screw anything up.

Thanks!

Most HD's have an operating temperature of 60°C, so as long as you don't go above that my guess is you'll be fine. I've seen my HD reach a top of 42°C, but since the 2nd HD doesn't have a sensor, I don't know what temps that one reaches, but being the boot disk, my guess it would be more than 42°C, so something around 50°C sounds reasonable.

You're within safe limits depending on the manufacture of the drive. The stated 60°C op-limit is for Maxtor drives. But I think that's a pretty common standard. You can find this kind of info on the manufacturer's website.

Temperature Monitor says the hard disk inside my MDD is 33 ºC (91 ºF), I guess that is cold but please note that I have just one drive… and a wind tunnel computer with speed holes !

Mine reads 35°C most of the time, I have 2 in there. 42°C was under heavy load.

I have four, right now:

102.2ºF, 86.0, 114.8, 114.8.

Sometimes the third one peaks up around 129ºF, but only rarely.

Hrm. Get this: I had my Quicksilver's case door open so they'd get some air. They stayed at 50 degrees C. I SHUT the door, and they dropped down to 47. Well... at least I know they aren't too out of line, but having 3 drives makes things hot in a g4 apparently.

In my rev.C DP2.0 PM, my hard drive never reads above 30C (~85F). Hopefully this means a long life is in store for it

I too have been contemplating this. My recent upgrade of an old 533 up to a dual 1.3 has generated a lot of heat. Two of the hard drives on the bottom of the case read a temperature 116.8 and 114.8F.

With this same upgrade in my previous g4, I eventually ended up putting an additional case fan in and it lower the temperature around 10F.

I used some twistie ties to put a fan above the HDs, blowing on them. The temps are now down around 39-42 degrees. Much better.
