hello; i have a relatively new 15" powerbook, 1.5 ghz. i produce music and have my audio set up to go through an external soundcard, motu 828mkII. first, how do i get rid of that horrible screeching modem coming through my built-in speakers? it's ridiculous, i've tried looking everywhere. also, it seems my volume control for my "system output" (set to "built-in") is ususally greyed out and unusable unless a DVD is playing. of course this makes it impossible to simply MUTE the audio when my modem is screeching. any help appreciated!

As for the greyed-out volume thing - what about the volume keys on the 'book (F3-F5)?

They will not work for external audio interfaces, mind.

As for the modem sound: System Preferences --> Network --> Modem --> Modem --> Speaker: off.

btw, this turns up if you search teh System Preference Help file for "modem sound".
