I'm thinking about getting a refurb iBook 900 from Apple $849. I don't know anything about refurbished products. Do they look brand new? I know the iBooks are prone to scratches... I'd hate to get this iBook for my sis and have it all scratched to hell.

They are usually missing anywhere from 5-15 keys on the keyboard. Most of the time, the cover is scratched beyond repair. The hinge on the screen is sometimes barely attached. No batteries. No power cord. No operating system. There is a range of 10-30 dead pixels/hot pixels and maybe there are indentations from the keyboard into the LCD screen.
Otherwise, it's a good deal.

There are almost *retail* new and sometimes with higher standards of inspection than the ones on the retail floor. They come with the same warranty and are applicable for AppleCare. I was looking at the same batch of iBooks last night. Some people believe in Gremlins, and some (like myself) find it to be a good deal.
However, remember the G3 iBooks had logic board issues. Mine did. But, don't let this hold you back. Apple will fix the logic board; I am just telling you because you might run into these issues.

Yeah, I just came back to check on this thread... and I couldn't find it.
Reason being... it's in the wrong forum.
I would do a search either site wide or iBook forum specific for "refurb ibook"

You gave me the answer I was looking for, thanks.
And yeah, I don't have the iBook forum bookmarked, therefore it didn't exist.

Microcenter has a limited amount of NEW ibook 900 mhz 12" for $800. Good deal:

I bought one from Microcenter last week. The first one had a DOA battery that would NOT charge.
After a swap for another one, works like a charm. I even play alittle halo with it (albeit with ALL the details turned to low) and an external mouse.
The great thing about the microcenter deal is it includes an airport card (regular, not the extreme) and 384MB RAM installed.
I just upped the RAM to 640MB by replacing the extra 256 they included. There may be a few limitations with G4 optimized software, but I've had great luck with everything so far. I just wish it had built-in bluetooth.

I found that yesterday but it had already expired.
Well, I have a choice:
refurb 12" iBook G3 900/128/40 - $849
or
new 12" iBook G4 800/256/30 - $964 (from Amazon, after rebates)
I'd definitely have to upgrade the memory on the G3 to at least 256 or 384, another $50 to 75. The refurb doesn't seem like such a good deal after all.
