Here it is so far. The actual is 8 x 10 @ 300 dpi. So I made a low res JPG. When I'm finished, if anyone would like a copy, I can post again. I used Maya to render the ships, then used Photoshop to add all the lasers, lighting, smoke, and explosions.

Still not sure what I want to do with the A-Wing. I just added some smoke on the left engine, so he's screwed. Not sure if I'll add another explosion, though. Might be too much.

A-wing: Make the pilot ejecting out of it and make his head explode. Or use that bunny with the pancake on its head.

Nice PSing - this for a class I assume?

Nice job.

I concur. Unless these little things emanate their own light source, they'll probably be darker. That could also let you play up some of the reflections from the lasers.
Looks pretty good, but again, make them darker. And doing Levels won't make it any better. If you want it to look really nice you'll have to go in and shade them manually.
If I wanted to be real picky I could say that the explosions look a little odd with all the gray surrounding them. If it is currently being shot, then I'm not sure it'd be smoking just then.

But very nice.

Composition is good. I like the pose.

Lighting is harsh. Add more falloff.

Pull that camera back a bit, don't be afraid to show more... space.

I like the stars. Too many folks just take a 3 pt. white dot and go nuts. You didn't. Nice.

I also think the 2 fireballs look more natural than most "explosions" you see in these shots.

I realize that space has no air in it, but maybe some depth of field to knock back the death star and that A-wing.

All in all, I think it's a very good composition.
I'd really like to see what you can do with a shuttle landing on the Endor platform.

HTH,

Interesting. I'd shift the angle of one of the two Tie-Fighters rather than having them side-by-side like that.
Also, smoke in space? And is the Tie with the red looking larger than the X-Wing? Perspective seems a bit skewed.

But nice job. How long did it take?

The wings would be for landing or flying in an athmosphere. At least, I can handle that suspension of disbelief.

Besides, the speeds needed for spaceflight would pretty much rule out dogfights, but ...

I am by no means qualified to make art critiques, nor am I an astronomer but I do see the Orion constllation over and over and over....

change the stars up a bit, its the same pattern everywhere

other than that, to my untrained eye

spiffy =)

I just noticed that. Good find.

I see a faint red supergiant. That is Betelgeuse. Also a variable star. And on the bottom right, I see the blue giant Rigel giving off a faint blue light.

[I love astronomy. ]

It looks like a stock star pattern.

Glitterato can give you a decent star pattern. Now I assume you're only using a jpg or something as the background. If you want, send me a PM with the dimensions and dpi and I'll make a custom star pattern for you.

I guess I'll have to be a little picky. Some of the models look a little flat and plasticy. I think you also need to set the foreground, the ships, apart from the background, the Death Star. Right now the DS only looks slightly darker of blurrier. I think the only major problem with this shot is the lighting and the textures. Also, where is the light source coming from. On the ship farthest to the left, it looks about a 45 in direction, but the death star appears to have its light source coming from about 20 (if we pretend 180 is on the left and 0 is on the right). Besides, where is all that light coming from anyway? Given the scale, they'd have to be pretty far away from the DS, and it looks like its 3 feet away.

Take those improvements into consideration and it'll turn out very good.

Oops, didn't notice that about the stars. My backdop was so big I just patterned the stars. I'll try and make up something more random.

Thanks for ALL the input. So much more work I need to do now.

I can change the laser color on the TIE with no problem. I just made it red to distinguish the Interceptor with the normal TIEs (which you'll notice are green.)

And yes, smoke and explosions in space becuase it's Star Wars... in a galaxy far, far away... with stars that look very much like the Orion constellation.

Anyway, in Star Wars there's smoke and explosions, and the ships fly like they're in normal atmosphere. So I've stuck with that like in the movies.

TIE interceptor is too big, now that you mention it. I'll shrink 'em.

Perhaps have the enterprise in the background blowing up the death star!

ah I c... well if you still want a red laser why not have the x-wing firing at an object off screen... all alliance spacecraft have red lasers and all imperial spacecraft have green... god dammit I sound like a star wars geek... really it was just an observation from watching the movies a couple of times i swear

not if the craft had an insanely high power to weight ratio.
