At the Controls.

They're still shaking out the bugs, so I don't think it's available as an actual podcast yet. The plan is to have the first "official" show in the new studios, so that'll be recorded at 3 Pacific on Friday.

Then, after the show each week, since they have room in the new studios, they're going to broadcast an all-night LAN party.

Glenn Rubenstein is the At the Controls host, so if you haven't seen it, you'd only know him as a video game journalist. Iyaz Ahktar is part of TWiT's growing news department. He's on TNT every day. On the gaming show, he occupies the position of the person who isn't much of a gamer, so he keeps the show going by getting bored easily.

As for Merritt, I don't exactly dislike him, but there are certain cues I get that tell me he's full of himself. I'll admit, they're tiny things, but they still bother me. Stuff like him not dancing with everybody else at the end of TNT, or when he's doing comedy routines, he gets this little "look how funny I am" head bob.

I think the worst is how literally every other show host says at some point during the post-show, "okay, we've gotta get out of here or Tom's going to get mad".

That sounds pretty reasonable. I don't see him except when he guest hosts twit.

He is an immensely talented broadcaster. I wouldn't deny that for a second.

Edit: I actually started listening to the TWiT network because of hearing him guest on The Gadgettes. I like Molly Wood a lot too.

I'd be thrilled if they could just get Patrick Norton to stop saying "basically" and breathing through his mouth.

Correct, except I haven't quite dropped the hammer on cable yet.

It's close though. I'm down to Mythbusters, Modern Marvels, and X-Play. I'm sure I could grab those online.

It's a 1000 kb/s stream, so that translates to what... half-gig/hour?

Merlin Mann just did a podcast with Rob Corddry on his show on 5by5. It was pretty good.

I don't find his regular show to be that good... it just feels like he talks in circles and circles about all this mushy buzzwordy touchy feely crud... but in small doses Merlin Mann is pretty entertaining.

They always mention today who they have booked, and I usually catch it.

They also passed along they think the ratings are dipping because there's not enough Dvorak.

If anything, I think their ratings are dipping because I've seen more new or unknown faces lately than I can ever remember. A lot of first-timers, which I'm sure can be a turn-off. I'm sure it's not Dvorak per se, but that they know what to expect from him.

I listened to TWiT for probably 5 years before missing an episode. Now I have a couple months to catch up on and I don't know if I'm going to. I liked Dvorak and think Dakar is right about knowing what to expect from him and also about having fewer first timers.

I've really tired of Dvorak's schtick, and really, Leo and the panel just make it worse because now they call him out on it, so it's become "You know that I know what position you're going to take, but knowing that I know, you're going to take the opposite position."

Dvorak think anything new is worthless or a fad, is more interested in food or wine, and is going to leave during every "commercial". Yeah, I miss that.

Is there a podcast out there where the participants really argue with one another?

I'd like to see one where they pick some sort of topic and actually debate it from both sides.

For instance, I'd love to hear a podcast with both apple and android fanboys and hear them go back and forth on the current issues in the mobile world. Only of course, if the participants were sane and entertaining.

You know, FWIW they said this exact same thing. There was even a discussion to make it more like TWiG with its regular panel.

If he could get people as good as Gina Trapani and Jeff Jarvis that would be pretty spectacular. It probably won't be Dvorak though. I understand he costs too much.

The solution to me is much simpler. They like to get 4 people on, so why not have a rotating cast of 2 well known regulars and two fresh faces on every week? After a while the fresh faces will be regulars themselves.

Edit: Also, my genius is unending.

The term rotating implies a constantly changing team. So anyone that's been at least 6 times is a familiar face (Even as low as 4). If you're picky, 9 seems like another good cut-off.

So any two of those people.

Well, I enjoy Patrick Norton because his pessimism appeals to me without being the semi-to-fully disingenuousness that Dvorak reeks off(in short, he explains his reasoning), Brushwood is good, though I think he's better in concert with Baratunde, Josh Topolosky (though I think he's likely good because he coincides with breaking big stories, but he is a fount of information when they do), and let's throw in Veronica Belmont to pretty up the place.

I think Norton and Brushwood have a bit of overlap, though admittedly one is much more sedate than the other. It might stand to have one bland, serious panelist from the Malik, Lindsay, Gibson, Pournelle variety.

Actually Worley might be a good fit, because she knows how to straddle the line particularly well (I immediately regret using Worley and straddle in the same sentence).
