Sorry to ask a dumb question (we're all Mac newbies once in our lives)... but I'd like to adjust the font used for items on my desktop so it's black not white. There doesn't seem to be anywhere in preferences to do this. Help, anyone?

No way to do so AFAIK, unless ShapeShifter or Silk does this. Perhaps you would get more help in the GUI Customization forum?

It's not a dumb question. Out of the box, OS X doesn't let you change this.

ShapeShifter can do this, although I think I may have broken the ability in the current 1.2 release. But it's not a simple setting - you'd need to create a new theme using ThemePark and set the color in the theme, and then export the theme and apply it using ShapeShifter.

I can provide more details if you're still interested.

wingchuner, does the tweak you're using make the names of files and folders on your desktop black? i've tried adjusting the colours in Silk but i'm not having much luck. if you know how, could you fill me in?

There was a thread somewhere in this forum where it had screenshots of how to change the shape of the outline and color but i can not find it, you might want to do a search and see what you can come up with. I never messed with the color of the font/back ground color...since i use deskshade plus to cover my desktop i never see them anyway. I was only concerned about changing the font with silk.

Silk does this but silk breaks Office 2004...

Okay, here's how to do it using ThemePark and ShapeShifter:

From ThemePark, choose File -> New -> New guiKit Package
Navigate to "Themes" and press "Add" to create a new theme variant. Double click it and name it whatever you'd like.
Navigate to Themes -> (your theme variant) -> Elements -> Global Elements -> Text Colors. Modify the "Finder Label" and "Desktop Label" colors to your heart's content.
Navigate to any other element in Themes -> (your theme variant) -> Elements -> Global Elements. Copy the graphic and paste it back in. This is necessary because ShapeShifter expects that a theme changes at least one graphic.
From the File menu, choose Export Theme -> For ShapeShifter.
Double-click the theme file you exported in the Finder. This will launch ShapeShifter and load the theme into it.
In ShapeShifter, choose the "ShapeShifter" tab and verify that "Restart Finder/Dock after applying" is checked.
In ShapeShifter, choose the "Themes" tab. Find your theme and click the radio button to the left of it. Press the "Apply Selected" button.
Lean back and say "kickass!"

Unfortunately, the "Selected" colors broke in ShapeShifter 1.2, and will appear white. But you can change 'em now and they'll work again in a future release.

thanks, smeger. i've changed the desktop font colour to black. it's not looking too nice, though -- where do i go in themepark to change its size, styling, etc? sorry for the dumb question, i'm just a little lost...

You can't do this with ThemePark & ShapeShifter, but I think you can change the font with Silk.

Doesn't seem to work on my system. Also it's still bold white and shadowed...

The only way I know to really control desktop text is to switch to pathfinder which i do often... but pathfinder still has a few kinks that keep me from using it full time.
