I see a lot of people mentioning OpenOffice.org. I thought I'd just mention this in case people didn't already know, but the preferred implementation of OO.o on OS X is currently NeoOffice/J. It's OO.o 1.0.3 wrapped in Java so that it acts like a normal OS X app. It doesn't need X11, it uses the regular OS X fonts, printing dialogs, etc., it's a double-clickable .app bundle, it works with Japanese characters, and so on.

Check it out here.

fruitmenu

jedit (great text editor, open source)
Pepper (great text editor, as good as bbedit but 1/4 price)
supercal (calibrates your display. Worth every penny)
imagine bootx 2 (changes the boot picture from a boring gray apple into something more colorful)
mactracker (tech dates of every mac)
carbon copy cloner (too good to be free)
audiox (transfer tapes or vinyls into mov)
transmit
combine pdfs (merges any number of pdf files into one single pdf)

Remember! - couldn't live without it.
CopyPaste - use it the most.

So many people have mentioned Launchbar that I would like to see a thread devoted to explaining to others all the ways the app can be used.

Whoah... I though LaunchBar was the ultimate in functionality, but I just tried QuickSilver, and I have to say this is probably THE Mac OS X poster boy application.

LaunchBar has already been removed from my startup items...

Newbs might want to check out this tutorial to get started.

Top 5 huh ... here are a few apps that I use often that I think people should check out. Obvious repeats

PhotoGrid X (Best image browser there is, I wish the author updated it to fix certain quirks I have with it. VERY FAST)

ExifRenamer (AWSOME, fits into my workflow like a dream)

iView Media Pro (It may not be cheap, but its cataloging features are absolutely great.)

ecto (Yes, I blog despite hating the word)

QuickSilver / LauchBar (I am undecided about the two right now, I don't care that QS is free since I have a LB licence already. QS can't do one thing that LB could ... when listing AddressBook entries I could press ctrl+c (Copy) and paste e-mail addresses in other applications ... I use that a lot when taling on IM with people who ask me for other ppl's e-mail addresses ... just nice to be able to do that without firing up Address Book. QS has other features that win over LB though ... using them side-by-side right now ... so hard to decide)

CSSEdit (perhaps, the best CSS editor there is)

WindowShade X (I use it a lot less these days primarily because I am now detached from OS 9 and Expos works like a dream)

Transmit (FTP client that works. I used to use Fetch when I could use the edu licence, which is nearly as good)

NetNewsWire Lite (Not the best RSS agregator, but its free)

iBert (Being a financial analyst / director you learn to appreciate Dilbert ... a lot)

Sync (A very good backup utility that uses psync to back up your data to external FW HD or anywhere you please.)

TinkerTool ("Fixes" a few OS X annoyances)
My Blog & Photos
PowerBook (Ti) 1Ghz 1Gb 60Gb SD

You got me really interested to explore OpenOffice/NeoOffice, except that the page your link takes us to says, prominently,

"As this is a development project, NeoOffice/J is intended for software engineers and is not yet complete enough for regular users."

Care to offer any reassurance (before I bother with a huge D/L) ? Stability? Intuitiveness of operation?

1) Circus Ponies Notebook (use it EVERY day)
2) DEVONthink -- recent comer, but great for archiving web sites/PDFs/Word documents... now I can FIND stuff!
3) Transmit for FTP -- Don't FTP all that often (usually use AFP), but when I need it, it's the best, bar none.
4) Unison -- Newsgroups, for when I have a lil' extra time.
5) Proteus -- if only because I have some friends that use MSN or Yahoo! I use iChat most of the time but Proteus 4 is now good enough for me to ditch the native chat clients, since I don't want 9 in my dock at once :-P

Fruit Menu
Pixadex

I have tried Quicksilver, and as much as it is an amazing app, I don't really have the use, but I will add my vote for "one of the coolest launchers available."

GraphicConverter
Transmit
DropStuff
VLC
...and KGA Golf, which I made. Self-promotion, sheesh...

Seriously the four above should be standard on every Mac, I think. Apple should practically make deals with all those companies to include the software - completely registered - on all Macs shipped. The wait for DropStuff was annoying.

The worst lack of support on Mac OS X is FTP. System Preferences holds a great FTP server that's probably the easiest to start FTP server ever. (Click "Start.") But how does one use that FTP server out of the box with Mac OS X? You can't.
The Finder can dial into FTP servers, true, but if you want to leave someone a file (I hear it's quite popular to want to do that, nowadays), you can't. Why doesn't someone at Apple get file uploads in FTP working in the Finder? I don't care if I have to queue them, just let me know that. Put FTP in the Finder, where it probably belongs.
That said, Transmit is awesome, and I daresay I'd pay for it even if the Finder included it.

I hope VLC can get developed again - it's a great program that really needs to be on Mac OS X - not everything's in nice QuickTime .mov, .mpeg, or readable .wmv files.

what is the program that i see many people have on their desktops that places itunes controls (pause, forward/back track) in the top tool bar? i would like very much to use this because i think itunes is kind of big and it would be nice to have simple controls available at any time.

Sorry, I didn't see your post until just now.

Regarding the interface: It's very similar to MS Office for Windows, but I'm sure you already knew that from the screenshot. It doesn't bother me, but some people don't like it. I haven't had any stability problems to speak of.

That disclaimer is there mostly to keep people from complaining that the software isn't perfect. In practical terms, though, NeoOffice/J is plenty usable for the average person. If you need flawless MS Office compatibility then this is not for you. If you absolutely require an Aqua interface, then this is not for you. But this is not something to be afraid of: It will not damage your system, and you can get rid of it by simply dragging the app to the trash. I say go for it, and use the University of Wisconsin mirror to save the developer some bandwidth costs.

ncftp (scroll down that linked page a bit for the client) - a great command-line ftp client. I like it better than the Darwin default because you can upload/download entire directories;

DragThing - A much less obtrusive dock, highly configurable. I bought it because I used to think Bruce Tognazzini was God and he likes it...he really likes it;

QuickSliver - in case anyone missed the link aboveit's everything everyone says it is and highlights very well the potential of Spotlight;

Konfabulator - or Dashboard, or, er...whoops. Desk Accessories, anyone?

Chicken of the VNC - free VNC app. I like it because, even after nearly 15 years, my wife still can't figure out how to work her Mac half the time and I'm tired of getting up from mine.

new powerbook, so new list:

openmenu -customizable contextual menus
dockblock -let's me use the fullscreen (with reason, photoshop, etc)
onyx !
shapeshifter
safari enhancer (no link underlines, no cache)
slim battery monitor -nice, can "vanish" when batt is charged

itunes track & imote: "invisible" control of itunes from any app, and text onscreen (of what's playing)

there really is a wealth of well-designed & useful shareware/freeware out there
(as this thread suggests!)

Great thread!

Beyond what has already been mentioned, I absolutely love EarthDesk 2.6 . It turns your desktop into a dynamic map of the earth. The next version will include the ability to download real time cloud imagery off the net and transpose it on your map. Other shareware offering can already do that, but in my experience, Desktop Earth has the most crisp graphics. There a lots of different options of how the map is displayed........they offer a free trial which is essentially the same as the paid for version except it says "Non-Registerd User" on your map......

I think I'll be using Quicksilver now instead of Launchbar
I tested Quicksilver yesterday. I am a longtime user of lauchbar and wanted to check the differences.

As a result I must say that it would be embarrassing for me to copy an existing application (launchbar) and add nothing more than a little eye-candy.

Plagiarism is allowed with software but it adds no value for me. I prefer to support smart people instead of unimaginative developers who only know how2 operate a copier ( - like a bad secretary?).

And if you really don't have the money there is a freeware version of launchbar that has only slight restrictions.

And do you know what? Launchbar is much faster that QS. Ha!

Cheers, Michael
