For the past day or two, I've been experiencing kernel panics. And they only seem to occur when doing specific things, like looking at a specific webpage... etc.

Anyways, when they first started I went to do a permissions repair and was greeted by this;

Repairing permissions for “Leopard”
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconfig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writeconfig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/authopen" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Permissions repair complete
I expect this stuff is my problem.

How critical is this stuff and how can I repair it? I've tried repairing with OnyX as well and got nowhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can we expect that a moderator does a forum search before he posts a new thread? Or glances over the first page in the forum at least?

The ARDAgent warning is normal and can be ignored. For the rest of the SUID files, you need to download the combo updater, re-install 10.5.1 from it and then repair permissions.

Wonky permissions seem pretty unlikely to cause kernel panics anyway. I'd look elsewhere.

I agree with Chuckit. Check out CATS' thread to see if your KP is one of the panics posted there. Incorrect permissions will not cause your kernel to barf.

Hmm. I'll try to remember to snag the crash report after my next KP then.

Uh, in those links, we already established what the SUID permission warnings meant, and that they're perfectly normal. It's almost like we're going to need a sticky on this.

And I'm not sure what any of the three links he posted has to do with Barbara Schönberger.

Why not snag it right now? Did it not leave the panic log in /Library/Logs?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Huh?

I said in my OP that visiting certain sites causes a panic. Visiting Barbara Schöneberger's site causes my machine to panic. TETENAL posted the link to Barbara Schöneberger's site.

???

Sorry about that, it looked like you were referring to the links in the post that you were quoting, not some other link in an unrelated thread. None of them had anything to do with Barbara Schöneberger that I could tell, so I figured you were getting at something else.

Anyway, if you posted the link that makes your machine kernel panic in this thread, we could at least see if it makes other people's machines panic too, or if the problem is limited to yours.

I'm not an expert at reading panic logs but it looks like you have a problem with either your USB mouse or keyboard.

That link is not crashing for anybody else. As Art said, try another mouse and keyboard, and if you have a hub in between try without that.

I'm having a similar problem after installing 10.5. Reinstalling is the remedy?

No, reinstalling is not the remedy.

What is the problem you are trying to fix?

It's informational. Must be some sort of Apple oversight.

But the bigger question is what problem are you hoping to solve by running the repair permissions script? You should not run the script unless you have no reason to do so or don't really understand what it is doing. There is actually an exploit that capitalizes upon the impulses of Mac users to run this...

However, regardless, ask any good systems administrator and they'll tell you that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". There is really no such thing as preventative maintenance outside of what OS X already does on its own, and if there was, this would be a bug, and it would manifest as some sort of actual problem.

I have an impulse to run the maintenance scripts, because that is all I've ever heard from the forum community. Repair permissions and run maintenance scripts, expecially after upgrading or installing new software. What you're saying is counter to what I've heard in the past. Another forum has said to not run DiskWarrior either. What to do, what to do?

I don't understand the rationale behind doing what was suggested, so I can't account for it. Was there ever a reason stated?

What to do is easy: don't worry about stuff until you actually have a problem. Computers are not cars.

I guess it's assuming you had some valid reason for wanting to reset the permissions and is warning you that it isn't going through with it.

Repair Permissions: If you're experiencing a problem. If everything's working fine, you don't need to.

DiskWarrior: If you're experiencing a problem. If everything's working fine, you don't need to.

Maintenance Scripts: You never have to run these, because the system runs them automatically (and they don't do much of anything anyway).

Because it's the blind leading the blind, and you actually think doing this voodoo will SOLVE things, when it won't.

Not to mention that the people who swear that doing these things helped were actually seeing a coincidence, instead of an effect.

In other words, they had a problem, did the above, restarted, and reinstalled. In all likelihood, the restart or the reinstall itself fixed the problem, and not all the voodoo beforehand.

Just like people assume that if there are problems after an update, the update was the cause of the problem. 9 times out of 10 if they reinstall the system and then reinstall the update, they'd find that the update wasn't the cause of the problem.

All people really need to do is make a clone of the system (with either SuperDuper or CCC) and reboot before applying an update. That way, they can restore the system easily if there's a problem. Then they can try reinstalling the update. If the problem goes away the second time, then it wasn't the update's fault.

Unless there is a hard drive problem. Then running DW will fix it. And then you might have a permissions problem. And running a fix on the permission will fix it.

But running these for ANY problem wont automatically fix it no.
