Confirmed: Apple and AT&T signed five-year iPhone exclusivity deal -- but is it still valid? -- Engadget

So: no Verizon iPhone for quite some time, if ever, and no unlocking.

We're talking court documents here, so it's gotta be true, right?

Well, it's a fact that there was the intention for this to last 5 years.

But we don't know if Apple and AT&T meanwhile agreed on something else.

AT&T has issues with their network, I'm sure Apple is using this to establish a second player to "offload" some of the bandwidth.

I'm betting the favorable data plan rates that are available for the iPad are due to the iPhone contract coming up for renewal. It just doesn't seem like AT&T to develop a reasonable plan for iPad data when they overcharge for all the iPhone stuff.

"Favorable" considering the iPad data rate (at least the Unlimited plan) is still the same as the "overcharged" iPhone data plan? And that someone who has an iPhone and iPad has to pay $60 total in data charges--to AT&T? I wouldn't call that terrible "favorable," but that's just me

Allow me to enlighten you.

First, the iPad isn't a phone. It's more in line with the netbooks and USB modems AT&T sells.

So, with that in mind.AT&T's cheapest plan for a straight data connection plan is US$20 a month. For 10MB of data. It's US$60 a month for a 5GB plan. So to connect your laptop, you have to purchase a USB modem and then pay anywhere from $20 a month for a pathetic data cap or $60 for a reasonable amount. To connect your iPad, it's US$15 for 250MB or US$30 for unlimited. What appears to be truly "unlimited."

That's favorable.

(And charging me $20 for unlimited texting on the iPhone when it's bundled with other phones' data plans is overcharging me.)

I'm a little disappointed with this news - I was hoping to jump ship for more consistent coverage. Alas, I hope ATT does something to improve their network, and at the same time I hope Apple improves the iPhone's battery.

Personally I don't want a Verizon iPhone, but if bringing one to market means AT&T finally has some competition and needs to improve their network (and maybe pricing) then I'm all for it.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

Heck, if Verizon comes online, AT&T doesn't have to do a thing to their networks, and it will still improve.

Customers will switch and leave the AT&T networks less crowded.

The plot thickens--or rather, the data thins.

Proof elusive in claims of five-year Apple-AT&T deal - Computerworld

I'm rather expecting some rumor site or other to report that a Yeti was sited in Cupertino using a 4G iPhone that was operating on the Verizon network...

Verizon will never get an iPhone: they've announced a deal with Google to develop an iPad-rival tablet.

Yeh and Apple will never run Microsoft Office on the Mac...uhh hmmm.

It's about money, If Verizon work out a deal so they both make money than the iPhone will one day be on Verizon. This will be a money making deal iPad rival or not.

Here's my favorite quote about rumors, specifically w/respect the rumor from Digitimes that Apple has ordered up to 10 million CDMA iPhones:

10 million Verizon iPhones? - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Tech

"Although Digitimes is closely read by Western reporters, its track record is mixed at best. Three years ago, MacRumors' editor Arnold Kim briefly stopped linking to Digitimes because the accuracy of its reports over a 5-year period (14 rumors total. 1 True. 10 Wrong. 2 Possible. 1 Unknown) was so poor."
