i just downloaded my spring 07 course registration list from the school server in XLS format and it reminded me that I can't open it on my macbook even though I have iWork. is there any freeware that could look at those files or anything that apple makes?

iWork should definitly come with something. ugh.

If you have a Google account, you could try to upload the file in their spreadsheet program and open it that way.

Yep - Neo office is pretty good, Open office under X is good too, depending on whether you can live with the interface being not 'Apple' enough....

It's not, but, with an education discount, it is pretty cheap, for what you get

I don't think you can purchase the individual programs in Office on the Mac. At one time I think this was possible but the option is not there anymore. I think you can still purchase them on Windows as individual programs.

NeoOffice is the way to go because it is free. Check here for requirements:

NeoOffice Downloads

It can be slow to launch on older systems but it is fairly fast once it is up and going. I use it on my Mac Pro and it is almost as fast as MS Office.
