I have an opportunity to live for a year or half year in, well just about anywhere, as long as it has a college/university - that's where the job would be.

I have a friend in New Zealand, and that was my first thought, but I want to consider other possibilities. English-speaking would probably help, but is not essential, though I do need to have one child in school - second or third grade. It doesn't necessarily need to have a large or well-known university, but that would probably help too.

Any suggestions?

My choice would be England.

Why live in England when you can live in Ireland instead?

Nicaragua, great place. Very rustic, but Managua is there for you to visit. I love going there.

Where do you see yourself?

What would you do of your spare time?

Would your mate follow and what would that person do?

And what would be your worst fear about such a project?

Wow, uh, I don't know. My wife and kids would come, and I don't know if she would work, I just haven't thought about that. My worst fear is that me and/or my family would just feel so unfamiliar to everything that we'd hate it.

I think if you could take the time to look into these questions, you might have a better idea of where you would want to go.

Canada and New Zealand are pretty safe, but in terms of exotism, I think New Zealand could be a great place to be, considering you have a friend there, that the climate is rather benign, people are great and Nature is just "out there".

Plus: Surfing and downhill skiing in the the same day can be seen as a bonus.

Actually it is. The nature and people here are so overwhelming that after a certain time (2 years seem to be the point) people want to leave.

But during that time it's probably one of the most beautiful (and weird) places to visit. If you want more info (about the schools, language, whatever) feel free to ask or pm me.

Building in Iceland? Better clear it with the elves first

In nearby Kopavogur, a section of Elfhill Road was narrowed from two lanes to one in the 1970's, when repeated efforts to destroy a large rock that was believed to house elves were thwarted by equipment breakdowns. The rock is still there, jutting awkwardly into the road, but it is unclear whether the tenants are.

"With the artificial lampposts, there's too much light for them, and there's also too much noise," explained Gurdrun Bjarnadottir, who has lived across the street for some 30 years. "A lot of people believe they still live there, but I think they've moved."

In the same town in 1996, a bulldozer operator, Hjortur Hjartarson, ran into trouble as he tried to raze a suspected elf hill to make way for a graveyard.

After two different bulldozers repeatedly and inexplicably malfunctioned, and local television cameras failed when trained on the hill, though they worked elsewhere, the crew halted the project. "We're going to see whether we can't reach an understanding with the elves," Jon Ingi, the project supervisor, told Morgunbladid, a Reykjavik newspaper, at the time.
(yes, we are that mad)

1) Japan as a whole, and Osaka, is one of the safest places to live in the world.

2) You don't need to know Japanese to live in a major Japanese city.

3) Its a real cultural experience. A lot more so then traveling to another English speaking country.
