My friend just gave me a mac classic running system 6. It doesn't seem to have any of the basic software aside from chooser or TeachText. Anyone know where I can download some of the basic stuff like MacPaint or MacWrite, or any other cool stuff like that to run on it?
I miss the days of the G5 and XPS Pentium 4 running side by side as high-end machines.

Download it?! Then what? The Classic has a SCSI drive, a floppy, LocalTalk and an ADB bus. How are you going to get anything into it?!

AppleCare Support - Older Software Downloads
I just had to reinstall System 7.0.1 on an ancient Performa, I had to take the hard drive out and put it in an old G3 with a SCSI card. Then I was able to download and install the system.

You will enjoy this article from 1984:

Why? It's best used as a museum piece, not a functional personal computer that you use for everyday tasks.

We're supposed to SUPPORT these "humble earlier beginnings?" Again, why? To remember something fondly is one thing. To feel obligated to keep them up and running...meh.

I really shouldn't be involved in this conversation. I only started using a Mac 4 years ago.

I think its pretty cool to keep the older classic macs going.
I was using Photoshop 5 on my cube and I was amazed at the speed. Running os9, doing some simple and medium level image work was pretty fast.

Word 5.1 running on my old Mac SE is superior to Office 2004 running on my MacBook in almost every way.

The Mac SE was given to me by a client who used it as his only computer up until last year, when he replaced it with a Mac mini in order to watch DVDs (he doesn't own or want a TV).
