I need to create an image that is obscured by noise. It should look something like it had sand spilled on top of it, covering much, but not all, of the image. I've tried keynote and omnigraffle and gimp and a few freeware-type apps, but with no luck. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have photoshop, but I found a similar filter in gimp. Thanks.

Well I don't have photoshop, and have never needed to use it, and still didn't even with this task. Isn't it several hundred dollars?

Holy crap man. I wasn't aware that people still didn't have photoshop. That's like not having word on your computer or something.

I hope so, he was trying to use Omnigraffle to do this earlier, so it least he's moving in the right direction.

Ok, as long as you don't need CMYK, then you should be fine.

Thanks. I'm not really sure what's bringing out the graphics nazis. I had a simple one-time problem, it was solved nicely, and everyone should be happy.

I also use realbasic for simple programming tasks I have for work. Any programming nazis care to comment on what I should get instead?

Point taken, my point was Photoshop is less effort to download and install than gimp, and an infinitely better tool to use - it does everything better than gimp, looks better, is faster and is free for non commercial use.

Please don't bring the Nazi's into this.

I had already had Gimp on my computer, and it's free. You say that photoshop is free for non-commercial use - do you mean free for 30 days, or do you mean free indefinitely?

Kevin, I said "thanks" to you and to andi-pandi, and I meant it. The "nazis" comment was not directed at you, but at people who can't imagine why someone doesn't have and use photoshop. I personally don't know anyone who has or uses photoshop (I work at a university with pretty strict controls on software), so the surprise and condescension toward someone who doesn't have it were themselves surprising to me.

Most of the people I personally know that have Photoshop installed... well lets just say it's a bit of an overkill.

Esp when most all they make is retarded forum graphics that could be done in about anything now.

photoshop elements is quite cheap and has most of the functionality of photoshop itself. I used it for years until I started to get really serious. I'd certainly recommend it.

and really, why would a regular person either have or use Photoshop? It's expensive, it's complicated and most of the stuff has no functionality for most people. KidPix would probably meet the needs of most people.

I'll just speak up and say I don't have Word either. TextEdit is about as complicated as my text editing gets.

Because most people know somebody who has it.

You obviously never have to write anything of any significance then.

Because in order to write anything of any significance you need MS word...

What were writers doing without it all those centuries..

Uh, okay, how do you put in footnotes in text edit?

I don't think you are getting what I am saying.
To say unless you are using MS word, you aren't writing anything of importance or significance is kinda silly.

Some of the most significant documents we do have weren't made in MS word.

These are just tools. They don't make something automatically great or important.

There was great writers before MS word, and there will be great writers after MS word.

Footnotes are over-rated. If one1 were to be writing correctly2 in the first place3, one wouldn't need them4.

Pages? InDesign? OpenOffice?

I’ve stopped using MS Word altogether, ’cause it’s such a crash-prone, bug-ridden piece of junk (oddly enough, that’s not the first time someone has used that epithet about a Microsoft product ported to OS X) that consistently crashes on something as simple as pasting text that contains tables.

Pages has fewer features, but it’s fast and has yet to crash on me. InDesign is not a good app to write in, but can’t be beaten for typographical accuracy (where MS Word fails abysmally). Just a shame it’s so bad with footnotes.
