About every 5th time I wake it up, it reboots as soon as I hit the wake up button. Anyone else?

Maybe that will teach you to not download and install software that hasn't been officially released yet.

Because it's on Apple's servers does not make it "from Apple". It's "from Apple" when Apple releases it in iTunes. Until then you have to use a round about method of installation rather than a normal DL and install through iTunes. Lots of places where an install could get screwy in that scenario.

Probably not the case, but this is exactly why I wait for the official release rather than taking software off Apple's servers to have it a day before its official release.

Where do you think iTunes gets the software from to update the iPhone? AH HA Apple servers!! they surely are not coming from Microsoft servers.

I have it, installed it and its running great.

Hey guess what - the version released via iTunes is the EXACT same build as the one found on apple.com yesterday.

Actually not quite. The build number is the same (5A347), but the designator is different (it's 1,1 now) and it's not the same file size. And right now we simply don't know if that means anything important.

Anybody having their (official) install hang?

Mine looks to be stalled trying to access the iTunes store.

I'm hoping it's just the Apple servers being hammered.

We could not complete your iTunes Store request.
The network connection was reset.

Make sure your network connection is active and try again.

I downloaded my official update and worked on my iPhone. All of my music, videos, photos, contacts, calendars, mail synced BUT my iPhone apps I downloaded from the App Store yesterday, DID NOT SYNC. Also I can no longer access the iPhone menu under "Devices" in the iTunes sidebar.

Whenever I click on it, only a white background appears with the word "IPhone" and then an error appears "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838)."

Update: the iPhone menu in iTunes is still broken, BUT I was able download my apps to the iPhone through the built in app store, it knows if you have already purchased an item so there is no chance of buying twice.

I believe you are correct. The rollout of MobileMe and the iPhone 2.0 software have been nothing short of disastrous. What a total cluster f---.

Add iPhone activation problems to the list.

Neither Apple nor AT&T were anywhere close to ready for this launch. This is an absolute disaster, but I doubt either company learns from it.

Here's the TUAW entry on this:

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/11/itune...or-the-fjords/

and this:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread....94632&tstart=0

Is supposedly the discussion thread at Apple, but those servers are down at the moment too.

Yikes.

I take that back. This STEVE'S fault, not the employees who carry out HIS orders.

Maybe it was a bit optimistic to think you could launch an entirely new online service, an entirely new iPhone software and App store, and a new iPhone in the span of 2 days. Especially when ALL of these things are closely interrelated and are trying to connect to the same servers.

Here's how this should have gone:

1) Get the online service up and running first. Make sure everything works as it is supposed to. The only thing people won't be able to do yet is synch OTA with their iPhone. No big deal if everything else is working as it should. Give yourself a week to work out all the kinks.

2) Release the 2.0 iPhone software to current iPhone owners. Let them get the update installed and running, download apps, get things working with MobileMe, etc. Give current iPhone users a week to play around, download apps from the App Store, play with the new MobileMe synching features, etc. This also gives you time to work out any kinks in the App store and iPhone/MobileMe interaction.

3) LASTLY, launch the 3G iPhone. Everything else will be running smoothly and all the new iPhone owners need to do is activate their phones without having to compete with current iPhone owners clogging the servers downloading updates, playing with the App store, and connecting to MobileMe simultaneously.

I upgraded my first gen iPhone to 2.0. It crashed, and now I have a brick. I can't get iTunes to restore it to a backup and I have no idea now how to fix this. Thanks loads Apple.

That software was only intended for the iPhone 3G. It won't work properly on first-gen iPhones. Instructions on how to revive your brick are given in the article I linked to.

I did that too..but iTunes says the version I had was the latest version...so the one from the servers on Thursday was no doubt the correct 2.0 software.

It did have a different identifier. You have to download the correct software (the 1,1 software instead of the 1,2 software meant for the 3g iPhone) and install it manually.

Restored firmware (different build too) this morning to fix apps not launching and in some instances crashing the iPhone (reboot). Worked for a while, but there's definitely something odd going on still. AirHockey crashes my phone and a few more apps crashed too. Seems related to WiFi.

I found this which claims that a big source of the problem is that the final 2.0 build is unstable.

Anonymous developer sources are reporting that they've been poring over crash logs and discovering that the reported crash has nothing to do with their application. There's a growing consensus that Apple has released a highly unstable "final" version of the 2.0 firmware. So, maybe it's more of a shame that Apple, who laid the groundwork for a multitude of useful and exciting applications, rushed development and failed to build a better foundation.

Apparently most crashes are related to "Out of Memory" errors. Which means either a) They should have upgraded the RAM on the 3G iPhone to cope with the added resource hog that 3rd party apps represent.

or b) Memory leaks are rampant with the 2.0 builds that were released.

I'm hoping for b) because at least that's a software fix.
