Just finished installing my airport extreme card, but having trouble picking up any signal. To be honest, other than installing the AE card I'm not sure how to setup the rest so that I can get up and running. I was under the impression that I don't need an AE BaseStation and heard about free wifi? Besides that, the only other place I know where I can setup my AE to get a signal is to pay at Starbucks. I'm fairly new to this so any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Free wifi depends on your being where someone is offering the service. If I understand your post correctly, you are not using a base station.

If you are going to use this, I'd recommend the Netgear MR814 wireless router, it's cheap and i've found it to be very reliable. It has a somewhat tedious but not difficult web based set up.

However, that's just airport, it won't give you the higher speed.

Well, you will need a basestation or be in the vicinity of a an 802.11 signal to which you have access permission in order for your card to matter much. Even at Starbucks you need to be signed in as a user of T-Mobile hotspots, which requires a username and activation plus a monthly fee. Of course, even an airport base station has to be connected to the Internet through cable or DSL connection-again with a fee. If you are a student and live near a university with a wireless system, you can probably use your net access arrangements to connect to WiFi (802.11) wireless transmission. Hope this helps. Unfortunately, free, ubiquitous access to wireless Internet service has not yet arrived in our universe (i.e, the USA). I suspect that such universal wireless access is probably not too far away, however (but probably not for free, even if at greatly reduced rates).
