I've been reading a lot about RoR and AJAX lately and was wondering how these two could help me and enhance my productivity as a web designer.

I basically do HTML, CSS and some JavaScript. I tried getting into PHP a couple of years ago, but I had to realize that "programming" really isn't my deal.

Is this stuff even useful for a designer?

This kind of thing isn't really useful to a designer. It's more for the development side of things.

It looks useful for the back end stuff not design.

I've used RoR a few times, and it's a great framework. Once you get used to the idea of Controllers etc., it can be fairly easy to create some good stuff. However, I don't think you'll like the amount of programming that can be involved, and obviously it requires a bit of Ruby knowledge to understand the way things work. My suggestion is just to try it, and see if it works for you. It's easy to get working under OS X.

I guess it's got some stuff that would be useful to a designer, but it's really aimed more at application developers. If you're just interested in the AJAX part of Rails, the Javascript libraries it uses are available as a standalone download at http://script.aculo.us.

What applications/tools do you use to develop AJAX web apps/sites?

I use DW for all of my design work (coding view only though), but I've been wondering if there are any better tools out there.

BBedit maybe?

Also, are there any DW extensions that facilitate AJAX development?
