VGA display mirroring not working in Mavericks?

I have a strange problem. Connecting my 2010 MBP to a projector over a VGA adapter and enabling mirroring causes the projector to briefly mirror the desktop, but then it jumps back to extended desktop! Very annoying. Is this a Mavericks bug or could there be something weird in my setup? I tried rebooting and mirroring seemed to hold until I hot unplugged and replugged the projector.

Problem solved. It seems that a recent update to Airparrot (1.5.3), the Airplay-enabling application, disables mirroring while it's running! I've written to the developer to find out what's up.

I don't see the connection between AirPlay connectivity and video... An oops by a coder, maybe?

I know, weird, right? Airparrot support says they are now disabling wired display mirroring when the program is running to prevent freezing issues when Airplay-ing to an AppleTV:

This makes no sense. I wrote back saying that if I have to quit Airparrot every time I want to use local wired mirroring, then why is the app a menulet? I have Airparrot as a login item so it starts up all the time and is always available. Now, I have to change the way I use the program. It should just be an app that can sit in the dock and have right-click options instead of a menulet that is present all the time.
The whole thing makes no sense.

The only thing I can think of is that both AirPlay and local displays use some sort of path internally (like an internal PCIe 8 or 16 lane connection), and there's a conflict. But if that's true, then wouldn't pretty much all WiFi mess with local displays all the time? It's really not making any logical sense to me that one has any relation to the other.
