That image is about three years old. If you scroll to the right a few clicks, the place where I work, and am currently sitting, is shown still under construction with two tower cranes on site.

He probably means to the right, where the Capitol building has been pixelated. The roofs of the White House and surrounding buildings have been edited too.

Any idea if google will be doing maping with the rest of the world? I mean, clearly, this is damn cool, and I would love to be able to bring up stuff in say Japan or England.

That's not the runway at area 51. It's too far to the northwest and there is no dry lakebed. Area 51 is not shown. This is area 51.

Wow. This must've slipped through the feds' audit of google maps before it went public. I wasn't so sure before, but now I think I'm a believer in all the Area 51 hype.

Here's this piece of mountainous terrain in Area 51, before and after some sophisticated image processing. Kinda creepy, huh?

before
after

What is causing the overexposure (for lack of a better term) on this Area 51 shot? Is it a method used to "block" satellite imagery (if so, why were the Capitol and White House pics merely blurred)? Or, is there a less exciting explanation?

Thanks for the info... these pics are amazing.

My guess is that it's just an artifact of the atmospheric conditions on the day the photo was taken.

It also seems not to be as high-res as some other areas, you can't zoom in as much, maybe on purpose

That's true. A lot of places of military significance seem to have limits on how far you can zoom in.

I think it's just that there are only so many satellites that can take the high resolution shots, and other than the secret military installations, there's really no reason to take super high res pics of the desert.

The owners of those satellites would rather be taking pictures of things they'll actually get paid for.

Thats strange, if you scroll down a bit you see a piece of another one

edit : there's yet another even further down
there's plenty more, looks like all along that resolution-difference line, keep scrolling down and you'll see more.

My guess would be markers added to the satellite photo for stitching. It's obviously not part of the terrain.
