The political propaganda/indoctrination against guns and the 2nd amendment is a smokescreen. The left doesn't want to admit the real problem is how we ignore the wack jobs on the streets until crap like this happens. The phrase "Personal responsibility" is a no-no to them. Blame all of society, and punish all of society with gun bans that do nothing. The schools, mental health professionals and even friends and family and such dropped the ball. Criminals will break the laws, and even creating laws with all caps won't stop them. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Its up to you to protect yourself. Personal responsibility.

Personal responsibility is not as much an issue with people with mental problems. It's that almost nobody wants to admit that our mental health system looks like it was developed by patients, not by someone trying to help them. It's hard to get into even counseling without a referral, it's (VERY) hard to get insurance to pay for it, and even harder to get Medicare or Medicaid to pay.

And then there's the stigma of mental illness, which comes from 99.999% of the population having totally wrong ideas about what mental illness is, means, and does. The mental health community considers that just about everybody will have a mental health issue during their lives. Flash: depression (diagnosable, not just "the blues") is underreported and underdiagnosed because it's under "looked for." And it is a mental illness. It's been called the "common cold of mental health," because just about everyone is going to at least brush up against it during their lives. The really difficult illnesses like schizophrenia stand out like a sore thumb if you have even a clue about what to look for, and even those can be mitigated, even well managed, if intervention starts early enough. But do we do that? No, we "help the guy out" by NOT reporting that voices told him to shoot out his neighbors' tires, or that the lady is convinced the president has video recorders watching her 24/7. That's obviously a whole lot of help, isn't it? (Sarcasm was set to "overload" on that bit...)

So, what can realistically be done to change this without screwing with peoples rights? The main reason background checks are mostly worthless is that this kind of info isn't available.

No words can express how screwed up this is:

MILLER: D.C. businessman faces two years in jail for unregistered ammunition, brass casing - Washington Times

Actually, they can, "f*cking government thugs". No wonder DC is a s**thole.

Emily Miller has LOTS of examples of how idiotic the police and law enforcement is. You can take any 10 cops off the street and ask them about the gun laws in DC and ALL of them will give completely different answers. They still think banning guns works, and will never comprehend their own stupidity. They even re-elected Crack head racist "JA" Marion Barry again! Of course they are a local laughing stock. They need to go viral!

No comments about LAX today? Why didn't the police who were on the scene not shoot him? It was obvious that's what he wanted, wandering around like that. He didn't even harm anyone until he walked up the terminal and opened fire on the TSA agents, likely hoping one of them was armed. What kind of incompetent officers work those jobs? He wants out that badly, just help him on his way.

I would think it's better to take them out before they get desperate and start shooting the employees, no?

You're straining at the leash to get serious here.

I'd have to know the details of the situation.

Alive is always preferable if it can be achieved without collateral damage.
It's very possible there were other targets they were concerned about hitting.
Usually, the takedown of an armed suspect without shooting them gets a "balls the size of church bells" award, not allegations of incompetence.

All that said, yeah, it's odd. The example which sprung to mind is Hinckley, and that's because he started shooting two feet away from a half-dozen Secret Service guys. Any different and he would have been perforated by multiple Uzis.

You only get that award if the perp doesn't kill anyone in the process, I would think.

Depends on the circumstances. What if you're not aware it's happening until he starts firing?

Then you probably don't make a very good law enforcement officer, considering that's exactly what you're supposed to be aware of.

Granted, it could definitely have happened before there was a chance to react, but unfortunately the ball was dropped long before this incident and that agent was the end result.

Thoughts and prayers to his family.

All I'm saying is it depends on the circumstances. Like you said: before there was a chance to react.

This isn't an out on a limb type statement.

As I read it, the police ran into the bathrooms with the other scared people, then stood inside "guarding the door". No, I'm not kidding.

We have to know more about the circumstances.

That was a joke. Cops fleeing into the can is pretty clearly the opposite of balls.
